Klaatu and Reeves

Of course Hollywood is remaking the classic 1951 science fiction film, The Day The Earth Stood Still. Almost everyone has at least heard of it which means that Hollywood feels obligated to at least try to remake it. This time it looks like they will succeed.

Keanu Reeves just signed on to star in the film. In case you’re wondering, Reeves will be playing the human and NOT the robot as some might think.

In fact, Reeves will be playing Klaatu, a humanoid alien who lands on Earth in a spaceship with Gort, his robot sidekick (well, really his indestructible, heavily armed robot), to warn us Earthlings to change our evil ways or we will be destroyed by aliens who are watching us from afar. Being the good citizens of the universe that we are we immediately shoot Klaatu thereby sending Gort into a tizzy. Yada, yada, yada…you get the idea.

The production is looking at a late fall or early 2008 start as a planned tentpole for the studio. It is being written by David Scarpa (The Last Castle) and is set to be directed by Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose).
