Tivo Alert: Damages marathon
I know, I’ve pimped Damages enough yet none of you watch it. Why not? Don’t any of you trust me? Have I
ever steered you wrong?
Now, if you say it’s because “There is no way we can watch as much TV as you do Mike”, then I get that. But if it’s because you are too busy watching Dancing with the Stars three nights a week, tsk tsk!
I will tell you this right now. Knowing how this show has gone 11 episodes into the total of 13 and given the choice between having to keep only 5 current shows on TV right now (not counting next February), it would likely be The Office, 30 Rock, Heroes, Friday Night Lights and Damages. It’s seriously as good as anything out there. In fact, with the rate at which Heroes is going, I’d give that up before Damages.
So why this blog? Well on October 20th at 8:00 AM EST, FX is running a Damages Marathon. I know what you are thinking: That’s 12 episodes, how can my TIVO contain all that info plus my Dancing with the Stars shows?…….
Well, if you have an HD DVR, then no worries, because they show isn’t in HD since FX is still crappy old SD FX. That alone should tell you how much I love the show, because I rarely watch ANYTHING not in HD.
The season is only 13 episodes for this series, which is pretty quick. I don’t even know for sure whether there will be a second season, because it might have just been intended for one.
Why watch it? The acting is superb. The stories are tight and fast-moving. You think waiting for the twins on Heroes is painful? This show blazes through the plot at breakneck speed, yet it never feels like anything is pushing it or unbelievable.
The show starts with a scene of blood and murder. Then it flashes back to 6 months earlier and continues to reveal stuff in the “present” as the show goes along. Each time, you are closer and closer to the present. Right now, we’re like 3 days away from the big opening scene.
You wont want to watch it because of Glenn Close and Ted Danson, but I’m telling you, both are absolutely brilliant in this. I forget that Danson was on Cheers or that his career sucked after that. He’s stunning in this in a very evil kind of way.
The episodes we’re watching now are creepy, spooky and nail-biting. The music is awesome. It’s one big, season long mystery coming to a close, a story way better than anything 24 or Prison Break has ever done. It would be up there with Lost in terms of excellence in writing.
Okay, I’m done now. The marathon is on the 20th. Tape them all, then watch the first few and if you aren’t hooked, delete the rest. But make sure you also tape the finale on the 23rd because I know you’ll regret it.
