DVD Picks for 11/27/07
Not a super awesome week for DVD releases, but one movie did come out that you just have to see.
It’s called Waitress and it stars Keri Russell, of Felicity fame. She’s turned in a pretty good actress and this movie fits her perfectly. It’s classified as a comedy, but it’s really a romantic comedy. Don’t cringe at the sound of that guys, it’s not like the run-of-the-mill romantic comedies you see all the time. This one was fresh and unique and had a great overall cast.
Plus it’s just hilarious and has some highly amusing scenes.
In addition to Russell, Nathan Fillion co-stars as her doctor that she ends up falling in love with, despite being married and pregnant. Of course those Firefly/Serenity fans out there will love to see Fillion in this. He’s hilariously awkward and funny. Russell makes pies in a little cafe in a small town, pies that are made for every occasion and known for hundreds of miles around. You also have a great supporting cast in Cheryl Hines, Jeremy Sisto, Andy Griffith and Adrienne Shelly. Griffith is surprisingly good here, as a mean old man, who isn’t really mean, who talks to Russell while ordering specific pies and meals. I didn’t expect to like him here, but he really helped make this a great film.
This movie is also known for the tragedy that befell Adrienne Shelly. She was putting the final touches on this movie when she was killed in a homicide where the murderer later confessed to the crime. She was just 40 years old and left us a perfect little movie to remember her by.
It’s a great little picture and it got an “A” rating by me earlier in the year.
Other stuff coming out:
- Hot Rod: Never saw it, but it has Andy Samberg and I might rent it. Richard Roper said it is worth seeing for two scenes in it, one of them being a tumble down a hill Samberg takes.
- The O.C. Complete Series: I know my wife would love this one…a good show with a crappy 4th season and a good finale. We’ll miss Seth Cohen in this house.
- Happy Days, Lavern & Shirley and Mork & Mindy all come out with third season DVDs.
Pop Candy makes her picks this week as well.
