American Idol returns on January 15th

I’m pretty much done with reality TV, but there are two mainstays that I still haven’t grown tired of yet. The first is obviously The Amazing Race, because that one just continues to be a solid competition, never trying to do more than it’s been good at for 11 seasons now.

But the second is American Idol (which returns on January 15th). Don’t ask me why, but every year I seem to get pumped to watch it. The advertisements begin ad nauseum and I start to remember how hilarious the previous season was, and soon enough, I’m looking forward to it.

Now, I will stipulate, and my wife will too, that I almost totally lose interest once you get to the final 12. Ironically, that’s when my wife gets MORE into the show than before.

I just enjoy the auditions and trying to predict the talent, and watching the idiots and losers who always think they can sing but can’t. And while Ryan Seacrest is everywhere lately and kind of getting annoying, he is awesome on this show and his reactions to the contestants are always great.

But once you get to the final 12, that’s when the long weeks begin of singing one night and the results show the next. It takes its toll after awhile and I usually tune out until it gets down to 4 or 5 left.

It all gets started again on January 15th, Entertainment Weekly reports, with 2 two-hour episodes the first week. The auditions will be aired up until February 6th, with the Hollywood rounds shown on the 12th and 13th.

The top 12 finalists will perform on March 11th, which will likely be the day I set my alarm and take a long nap.

Do you still get into the show? No matter what’s happened with it, the public still loves it and the ratings it gathers all season is absolute insanity.
