The Super Bowl here in Arizona is right around the corner (February 3rd) as you know, and the halftime entertainment has already been chosen. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will be performing and I really couldn’t possibly care any less about them.
Jason Clark has already stated that he’ll be taking a long bathroom break during halftime. Probably a good idea and likely nothing to do with undercooked brats.
I’ve never found halftime shows interesting at all, mostly it’s a lip-syncing snooze-fest, but people really get into it I guess. Why else would it be such a big deal?
I probably stopped caring around the time Janet Jackson’s boob popped out in the middle of our Super Bowl party with my wife’s parents in attendance. That was interesting.
(by the way, doesn’t Tom Petty look a lot like Michael McKean from Spinal Tap? - >)
So today, you all get to morph into the Super Bowl Music committee and find us the perfect halftime band for this season’s SuperBowl.
Who would you choose to play during halftime?
I truly have no idea. I love Snow Patrol, but they are probably too mellow at times for a football game.
Maybe The Killers? Something newer and fresh, not all these older bands.
I’ve never been too musically inclined, as my friends will tell you, so I’m leaning on you for help here.

I wouldn’t mind if they had some really good college marching bands perform or something. Seriously. I’ve seen some that were actually pretty amazing. Maybe they could have a contest or something and the winner could perform. Good publicity for college marching bands and good entertainment for football fans. It’ll never happen, of course, but still…

The Killers would be an awesome choice. It’s though to think of artists I would enjoy but also that the ‘corporate suits’ involved would also enjoy. Foo Fighters maybe. Green Day is another choice.
…Wow, I can’t believe I just said that corporate America and Green Day would go together.
Considering all the lame acts they’ve had lately, I’ll give the Super Bowl people credit for having Prince play that one time. I was a little worried at first if people would get into it, but he pretty much surprised me and rocked it out. Even with the rain. Some people may have not enjoyed his music still but I say give credit for that show as opposed to Paul McCartney.
For the Super Bowl, it needs to be a big, high energy band. I’m thinking Van Halen. They just got back together, that would be sweet. I saw them live back in the day and they were great.
My second choice would be someone like Nickelback, or the Killers, maybe even Linkin Park…yeah I roll like that.

OK, I’ll go against the grain and say that Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is a great choice. If you have ever been to a Petty show you know what I am talking about. I have seen them several times and they never disappoint. The energy level of the fans and the band is great. You also have a diverse audience in terms of age - from teenagers all the way up to people in their 50’s. Give it a chance, you may be surprised.
Adrian - Green Day was actually part of the pre-game show with U2 before the first Saints’ game back in the Superdome last year. So, if Green Day and corporate America got along then, I am sure they could do it again

Steven,
Hopefully you’re right. I always have the hope that I’m wrong so that I can end up enjoying the show. My vote is still for the Killers!
Well The Killers are my favorite band so I would love that! I also thought Prince did a great job when he performed in the rain, he is an amazing guitar player. But besides that one, they have sucked big time lately. I would also love to see a No Doubt reunion, Duran Duran (since they are back together!) or even a more R&B show with Alicia Keys or something could be fun! Anything but aging rockers that are trying to resurrect their careers. Boring!!

When you look at muisic icons, and who can throw a great show, I’d have to say Billy Joel would have been a better chioce than ole Tom….
Joel throws highly energetic shows that involve the crowd with music everyone knows, even if you dislike his music, you still know it =)
I hope Petty doesn’t let me down now that I stood up for him
I would disagree that Petty is an aging rocker looking to resurrect his career. He is aging, but his albums still sell well and his concerts tend to sell out.
As for The Killers - love ‘em. Maybe next year they will do a double bill with The Killers and Green Day. That would be a great show as well!

I loved a few years back when U2 did the show - that was great. I’m a Petty fan but I’m not sure I am looking forward to him doing the Superbowl half-time show. I think you need something a little more rock and a little edgier - it does not seem like his music matches what the game is about - smash mouth football.
I think I would lean for a more rock/punk-oriented band - The Killers, Green Day, Linkin Park (which somebody already mentioned and I think would be a perfect fit, especially in Glendale), etc. I’m even thinking that Lenny Kravitz might be an interesting match as well.

Kravitz would be a good choice. Billy Joel would be good too. I think No doubt would also be good.

I had not thought of Billy Joel - good idea, I think that would be a good choice as well.
Just a little aside comment on this. While I love U2 and thought they did a great job when they were the guest band, I really have a sense that football is an American game and therefore should be represented by American bands/artists. Just my opinion.

The only group I would actually sit and watch at half time would be Led Zeppelin!
you’re a idiot. you obviously have no idea what music is…you like snow patrol for crying out loud. true, petty is getting old, but hes been kickin ass and selling more rock and roll albums than anyone i can thing of for over 30 years. and he continues to do it. whens the last time you sold an album? i think you’ll be quite surprised by tomorrows performance
Tom Petty, ladies and gentlemen!
…I’m kinda confused.
Anyway, I sold an album once. It’s called “Coconut Banger’s Ball: It’s a Rap!”
Speaking of Idiots….nice to meet you Tom. Yeah Petty is still kickin a**…oh wait a minute, no he’s not, he cant kick any a** cause if he tried to kick anything that would require movement, and we all know Tom is a log and doesnt move. He did have a great lip sync though Tommy. I also dont think Mike has sold any albums but he doesnt have to, he’s at least kissed a girl in his lifetime unlike you and ole flat iron hair Tom…
Dead Beatles sell more records than Tom Petty! Enough said.
I like Tom Petty a lot, but that was not a good half-time show. Let’s hope he is never back on that again.
Prince did a spectacular job last year. I’d ask him back again.
