American Idol 2008 - Top 10 Women Performances

The American Idol Top 20 continued last night with the Top 10 women performances.  The women underwhelmed me last week, but I have to admit I thought they did much better this week.  I think perhaps the illness many of them were suffering from last week was a bigger factor than they let on during the broadcast.

This week there were three women who I felt performed better than the rest of the women contestants.

  • Brooke White - I hate this song.  So for Brooke to not only make me enjoy her performance but actually think she performed better than any other contestant means that she is a force to be reckoned with in this competition.  She doesn’t have a huge voice but the tone and quality of her voice is unmistakable, and if she keeps making brilliant song choices like this one she’s going to be in the competition for a long time to come.

Brooke White - You’re So Vain

  • Kristy Lee Cook - An early favorite of mine who stumbled last week came out and showed us that she is ready to take this opportunity seriously.  It still wasn’t the “blow me away” performance that I would like to see but Kristy doesn’t really have one of those big kind of voices.  She leans more towards country so I think if she stays in the competition (which she certainly should) she’ll start showing us much more of that side of herself.

Kristy Lee Cook - You’re No Good

  • Syesha Mercado - The judges didn’t seem to like her performance that much, but I thought the quality of her voice was unmistakable.  This might not have been the perfect song for her but it is obvious she has oodles of talent, and she still managed to have one of the best performances of the night.

Syesha Mercado - Me & Mr. Jones

All three of these performers should find themselves safe tonight.  Despite what the judges might have said, their talent and performances have shown through and I think America will respond by voting for them.

Not so lucky, will be two of the three people who I feel had the worst performances of the night last night.

  • Amanda Overmyer - I have never been a fan of Amanda.  I think I mentioned before how I don’t like anything about her.  Last night’s performance just reinforced my already strong opinions.  Her performance was a train wreck.  It was awful.  It was, by far, the worst performance of the night…probably of the week.  Hopefully, she’ll be an easy choice to say goodbye to tonight.

Amanda Overmyer - Carry On Wayward Son

  • Alexandrea Lushington - I actually like Alexandrea’s voice and style, but I think she picked a poor song last night.  The judges were right to call her out on it.  The song really didn’t allow her to show what she can do.  In fact, it was pretty forgettable for the most part.

Alexandrea Lushington - If You Leave Me Now

  • Kady Malloy - Why Kady, why?  Why must you spell your name with a D and not a T?  And why did you pick this stupid song?  I’m full of questions for Kady.  Kady should be one of the favorites with the way she looks and can impersonate certain pop stars, but Simon is right about how all of her talent seems to get left behind when she walks out onto the stage.  This was yet another poor performance from Kady.

    Kady Malloy - Magic Man

All three of these women are in danger of being voted off tonight.  However, I think that Amanda and Kady are the two who are the most likely to get kicked out.  Alexandrea has obvious talent and simply chose a poor song.  In fact, she wasn’t even that bad.  Amanda could possibly pull off an upset if there are enough gay/gothic/hard rock girls out there who vote to save her (I’m just guessing that’s her audience).

If there is an upset and only one of my three gets cut I can almost guarantee the other person will be Alaina Whitaker.  I didn’t put Alaina in my bottom three because I’m a sucker for the song she sung (hey, I love Grease, what can I say) and I didn’t think she was that bad.  But I can certainly see where she might not have enough fans to keep her in the competition.  If there’s an upset, she’s it.

Alaina Whitaker - Hopelessly Devoted

The remaining three women, Carly Smithson, Ramiele Malubay, and Asia’h Epperson are probably safe based mostly on what they’ve done in the past.  I’ve been completely underwhelmed with Carly for two straight weeks now, but the judges are still hot on her for some reason.  I can tell she has a good voice, but she isn’t doing anything to show it.  The other two both did fairly well last night.  I didn’t think Asia’h failed at her Celene Dion attempt nearly as badly as the judges did.  Both girls were also great last week which should be enough to keep them safe tonight.

Carly Smithson - Crazy On You

Ramiele Malubay - Don’t Leave Me This Way

Asia’h Epperson - All By Myself
