This weekend, while most adults were anxiously awaiting one of the most anticipated Super Bowls in recent memory, the nation’s tween girls were busy helping Miley Cyrus break records at the box office with her 3D concert film, “Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert.”
Disney’s “Hannah Montana” film brought in an estimated $29M in ticket sales this weekend from only 683 theaters for a massive $42,460 average. The total ticket sales is a box office record for the Super Bowl weekend. The G-rated film more than doubled its nearest competitor and sold out over a thousand showtimes during the weekend.
Disney only released the film on screens that were capable of showing it in digital 3D (96% of those sites featured RealD technology). Although limiting the release to only those auditoriums equipped with the necessary facilities to project in digital 3D limited the number of theaters that could carry the film, it allowed exhibitors to charge a premium ticket price. Most theaters charged $15 for admission. Given that the star’s 69 city concert tour is sold out, many parents were more than willing to spend a little extra to allow their children an opportunity to see their favorite singer in concert.
“Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert” actually set a number of new box office records this weekend although asterisks will have to be added to the record books since the film set the records with higher than normal ticket prices. As previously mentioned, it’s gross of $29M was the largest gross ever for a Super Bowl weekend beating the $21.6M gross of the horror film, “When A Stranger Calls,” from 2006. The film also set the record for the largest overall weekend gross over the Super Bowl weekend surpassing the $25.2M “Titanic” banked in its sixth weekend in 1998 (although that gross would be over $36M at today’s prices). “Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert” also set the record for the smallest number of theaters for a film debuting at number one.
Audience turnout for the film was exactly as expected. 84% of the audience was female with 70% of the audience being under the age of 25. Reviews for the film were quite good and the short 74 minute run time allowed a higher than average number of showtimes per screen. These are factors that will play into the gross in upcoming weeks, but with the core audience having come out to see the picture in its first weekend, it will be hard to gauge how much more this film can gross.
At any rate, the film is already hugely successful and any money Disney can add to the gross will only help. I would expect this film to play well for another two or three weeks before dropping off substantially. Look for it to clean up on DVD, however.
