First we find out that the setting for the fourth Terminator, “Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins,” will be the future post-apocalyptic world after a nuclear war - and that’s always cool. Then we find out that Christian Bale, Batman himself, has signed on as one of the major characters in the film.
Now we hear about director McG giving an extensive interview to The213.net in which he says, when asked who his dream Terminator would be: “…there’s guys out there like Russell Crowe and Eric Bana, bring a good physicality, they do what they do, but I don’t know if they’re exactly right at the end of the day. (Smiles) Josh Brolin is a very exciting actor - we’ll see.â€Â?
Josh Brolin has always been an excellent actor but is riding high right now because of his starring role in “No Country For Old Men.” It’s obvious that he hasn’t yet been cast, but the possibility of Christian Bale and Josh Brolin both being in the new Terminator movie makes the whole thing sound a lot more like a movie I’d want to see.
McG also used the interview to squash rumors that the John Connor character would only have a small role in this film. The director confirmed that John Connor is, in fact, one of the main characters of the film.

It’s intriguing because of the actors on the hook, but then again, consider the sucky director. McG (he’s so cool that he can’t bother using his actual name? How hip-hop…) isn’t exactly known for quality, story-driven films. Hi sbiggest claim to fame thusfar is not one, but two shlocky “Charlie’s Angels” movies. Unless things take a turn, I suspect we’re going to see that he’s cut from the much the same cloth as Bruckheimer - and I don’t mean that in the most flattering of ways.
Okay, okay, for the record, I did like “We Are Marshall,” but I also consider that a lucky fluke.

You know I’m excited to see the Terminator story continued. I mean, really, the Terminator robot might be the second most iconic villain next to Darth Vader.
How cool are those red eyes?
Actually, I was really impressed with We Are Marshall. I thought he did a fantastic job on that film. And he does have the action chops from the other movies so…maybe.
I’m with ya, Jason. “We Are Marshall” did certainly rise well above the fray when compared to other sports films. And he did a good job of keeping the time period feeling authentic.
Really, the “action chops” are what concerns me. So many directors these days seem to think that awesome visual effects, a few massive explosions, and, of course, some gratuitous semi-naked chicks are all you need for a good movie. I’m not necessarily against all of those elements, but only so long as they’re in support of a solid plotline, not in place thereof. Like I said, look up “Bruckheimer” in the dictionary if you’re not sure what I mean.

I definitely get what you’re saying. The thing that gives me the most confidence is having Christian Bale involved. He picks smart projects. It’s possible, of course, that he’s simply doing this for the money, but so far I have no reason to doubt that he still cares about a solid story line and a good script. I’m hoping he’ll insist on those things.
I respect the heck outta Christian Bale as an actor - and the majority of his movies are excellent - but I was very disappointed with “The Mechanic” and “Harsh Times.” His acting in both was well beyond par, but both films were, except for a couple of shining moments here & there, total crap.
It can sometimes be tough to differentiate: a bad movie can still have excellent actors in it - and they can still turn in excellent performances that still don’t manage to pull the film out of the trash heap.

True. I think sometimes, though, that Bale is SO good that he makes you forget that the movie wasn’t as good as he was…like in The Mechanic in which he was awesome.
I see Josh Brolin as John Connor and Christian Bale as The Terminator, but it could easily be the other way around. The film isn’t scheduled for completion until 2009, so a lot of things could change.
No, he was definitely talking about Josh Brolin as a Terminator. Christian Bale is not going to be John Conner either, but rather some other character.
His performance in ‘No country for old Men’ was top class. I only hope that the same will be said for this. Thankfully terminator isn’t so much about dialog and plot as it is action and entertainment.
