“Jumper” HD Trailer and 2 Posters

Jumper
It’s rare that one actor’s participation in a movie will make me loathe to even write about that movie.  Jumper (official site), however, was one of those movies because of the lead actor, Hayden Christensen.I don’t think I have to explain to anyone the mess that Christensen made in the Star Wars prequels.  Now, I’m not saying it was all his fault, but when an actor can bring down the quality of the work of everyone around him (especially good actors like Natalie Portman), one must wonder if he has enough talent to actually carry a film.  I haven’t seen him in a film since the Star Wars movies for this very reason.  I also chose not to write about Jumper all this time for the same reason.  Today, however, I have changed my mind.

The truth is, Jumper looks too incredibly cool to ignore.  I’ve been thinking for a while now that it looks awesome.  Truthfully, I thought the very first preview looked awesome.  I just couldn’t bring myself to say so.  Whether or not Christensen will flourish in this film or bring down the whole thing around him remains to be seen, but with Doug Liman directing (The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) I’m willing to believe that there’s hope for the young padawan.  (Ironically, Christensen, the reason I didn’t want to see this film, actually replaced a lesser known actor, Tom Sturridge, because the studio feared gambling so much money on an unknown actor.)

Jumper Teaser Poster
This was the first teaser poster for Jumper and the better of the two posters used for the movie in my opinion.  I like the look and feel of this one much better than the later one that is being used as the release poster (I believe).  I’ve included it at the end of this post for your benefit. This poster makes you think of action and adventure, of going places where you might not normally go.  The other poster makes you think of The Matrix or The Bourne Identity…not really that adventurous.

It’s the preview for the film that really captures your attention, however.  The special effects are cool without being too over the top.  I’m a little concerned that they’ve shown us too much in the trailers but I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Jumper - HD QuickTime Trailer
Jumper is based on the 1992 science fiction novel Jumper by Steven Gould. The book is only one of several in the Jumper series and the studio actually originally planned for this film to be the first in a trilogy (it’s not known if that’s still the plan).

The premise of the book and the film is that a genetic abnormality allows a young man to teleport himself anywhere.  He discovers this gift has existed for centuries and finds himself in a war that has been raging for thousands of years between ‘Jumpers‘ and ‘Paladins‘ who have sworn to kill them.  Paladins use some specialized weapons such as shock nets and whips to tie down the Jumpers so they can’t Jump away.

It sounds really cool and looks even better.  If the film is anywhere near as good as the preview I think we can expect to see the other two films in the aforementioned trilogy.  If Christensen makes like Anakin again…maybe not.

Jumper stars Hayden Christensen, Jamie Bell, Rachel Bilson, Diane Lane, Samuel L. Jackson, and Kristen Stewart.

Jumper opens in theaters on Thursday, February 14, 2008.
