Lost recap: “Confirmed Dead”

The second episode of Lost: Season 4 was called Confirmed Dead and the title pretty much gave away what we might find out this week about Flight 815.

So let’s get onto it. Lots to talk about.

The New Others

The first parachute guy who finds Jack is called Sam in the flashback, but tells them his name is Daniel Faraday, a physicist. He sees some of the ocean wreckage on TV and starts crying. Why? He doesn’t know and neither do we.

We next meet Miles, who is some kind of ghost hunter and can talk to spirits. He finds some money left by a dead druggie in his room while trying to exorcise it. He arrives on the island and apparently talks to Naomi’s ghost to prove that Jack and Kate didn’t kill her.

Daniel and Frank from Lost

The third crew member is Charlotte, a woman with an English accent who goes to a dig in Tunisia and finds the skeleton of a dead POLAR BEAR in the middle of the desert. And a Dharma belt or collar is buried right alongside the bear. She recognizes it, but we have no idea why. IS she Dharma? Is that clue a way to find the island?

Finally, a guy named Frank, whom we discover was supposed to be the pilot of Oceanic 815 that day, sees Seth Norris (the original pilot) on TV and knows it’s not him because there is no wedding ring on his finger.

All four of them have beacons on their suits to help find each others.

Locke is nuts

Sawyer, Hurley, Claire and the rest of the gang are following Locke, despite his admitting he followed orders from a taller Walt to kill Naomi. I’m surprised anyone is still listening to him after that and don’t think he’s totally bonkers.

An interesting moment occurs when Locke says they are headed to the cabin, but Hurley objects, pointing out that it’s the other way. Locke casts a glare at him saying “What cabin?”

What did that imply? Hurley shut up pretty quickly.

Ben from Lost

Ben is deadly even tied up

Locke and his gang find Charlotte and take her hostage. They attach her beacon to Vincent and send him off, where Jack and his crew find the dog.

But even though Ben is tied up, he snakes a gun from Carl and blasts Charlotte in the chest twice.

Of course, she’s wearing a bulletproof vest, which is odd for a rescue mission. Locke’s look on his face told it all. Why are you here?

Sawyer whoops up on Ben a second time this episode and it’s shocking that his face is still recognizable from the multitude of fists he’s taken to his head the last three episodes.

Juliette from Lost

The helicopter

So Jack and his groupies, along with Miles and Daniel end up finding Frank from a flare he shoots up. Frank was crawling up a hill to get to a good place for his beacon to send a signal, but it was broken.

Before he gets to the top, he sees a cow with a bell around its neck. Another island vision I assume. I love that stuff.

When they are all together, Frank is having his wounds attended to by Juliette, who tells him her name.

This is where the episode got really good. Frank realizes there was no Juliette Burke on 815, and therefore she must be a native…or someone there before the crash. He yells at Miles, saying she’s a native, and Miles comes rushing over asking “Where is he? WHERE IS HE?”

He then turns to Jack and shouts, “You want to know why we’re here? To find HIM!” and he pulls out a picture of the one and only Henry Gale, or Ben as we now know him.

Ben knows all

We flash back to Ben where Sawyer is about to shoot him for trying to kill Charlotte. Locke tells Sawyer that he’ll do it instead, that it’s his mess.

But Ben pleads for his life, saying he has the answers. Of course, when Locke asks the ONE question we ALL want to know the answer to, “what is the black smoke?”, Ben says he has no idea.

And I sort of believe him.

Without giving an answer, Locke about pulls the trigger and that’s when Ben gives us no answers, but finishes the episode with a bang.

He starts spouting off Charlotte’s full name and history, and then names everyone else we’ve met who are now on the island from the freighter and finally confirms what we already know:

They are there for him.

And when Locke asks how he knows it all…Ben almost grins:

I have a man on their boat.

BAM! Wham! Wow.

So what the hay is going on?

Abaddon, or the mysterious black man who asked Hurley last week about survivors of 815 in the flash-forward, appears at the end of Confirmed Dead with Naomi. They are going over the team members we just saw on the island now, and she questions her ability to babysit them.

And then she asks about the survivors of 815 possibly being on the island and he says “there are no survivors of flight 815.” Mostly said in a way where you try to tell someone ELSE what they need to believe, not what the truth is.

At the start of this episode, I didn’t think these people were in fact Dharma, which I theorized about last week.

Yet now at the end, I am still thinking that they are like some military team that Dharma has sent to find Benjamin Linus and get their island back. Of course, there AREN’T military, but a special group of people with different abilities.

Abaddon could be the guy tasked with putting a team together to find Ben and the island.

We didn’t get many answers in this episode, but I now firmly believe that these people are out to find the man that killed off the entire Dharma team in the Purge.

Why else do they seem so angry about it? Miles went nuts when he found out Juliette was a native and might know where Ben is.

So what do you think? Am I off-base? Did you get any better clues that I missed?

  1. A couple of things.

    1. Jack, Kate, and “Daniel” came across a silver case with gas masks - which reminded me of how Ben went “Jones Town” on the Dharma people - what they heck are these guys planning to do, gas the island as well?

    2. The cow - remember when patchy was at the “house” with all the tv stations and garden? He had a cow there and I think that is the same cow.

  2. Unless I am mistaken, Daniel Faraday was called “Dan” in the flashback, NOT Sam. Before I even recognized him as the guy who parachuted in at the end of the last episode, I called him ’some guy named Dan’ to my husband, so I feel pretty certain I heard it right.

  3. Thanks Kate…I didn’t catch that, we should have gone back. Even Jina heard Sam, so maybe we just blew that one.

Ape - good reminder of the gas masks, I missed that. Perhaps these people think Ben is running the island, so they might have to gas everyone as well to get it back?

  4. Here’s something we know now for sure, ghosts exist in the Lost universe and not just on the Island.

The new actors are very good. I enjoyed their performances.

  6. I love this show. Great episode. I think this is a good time to reflect and think about ALL of the questions I have about the show now… What is the monster? What is that ‘Hurley’ bird? Who/What is Jacob? What were those skeletons in the cave way back in season one? What’s the deal with the Dharma shark? What’s the deal with the Black Rock? Why was there a Dharma polar bear in Tunisia? Why did the old countdown ticker in the hatch have hieroglyphics? What does Charles Widmore have to do with this? How do these ‘rescuers’ know about Penny? (I believe Naomi mentioned her name) The four-toed statue?… this is just a small list of questions I have :)

  7. Good recap,Mike.
What was the four toed statue? I missed that reference.

  8. Four toed statue was from last year…if you remember Jin, Sun and Sayid on the boat to the Others, they pass a huge four-toed statue on the beach.

Like something out of Lord of the Rings.

  9. Adrian, you brought up things I completely forgot about. And there is so many more…
I was so excited when Locke asked Ben about the monster. I really thought for a split second “Yes, finally an answer!” and then when he said he didn’t know I was like crap, there goes that.
Oh well, I still love how they string us along!

  10. Nicky, I think that question was a tongue-in-cheek nod to the fans of the show who REALLY want to know :)
Great job by the writers I think…

  11. Yeah - I agree with you Mike. They did the same thing at the season finale of last year when Juliette tells Sawyer that the reason the Others made him and Kate break and move rocks was because they were building a landing strip for the aliens - lol.

    That was classic!

They are very conscious of what the fans think and I like it that they give those ‘winks’ to them via the writing. Good stuff. :)

  12. A couple new theories I just heard:
Michael is Ben’s man on the boat.
Miles is there so he can talk to Jacob.
Maybe with the whole Miles flashback/forward (who knows), the boy was Walt grown up and he is the one in the coffin.

  13. Michael on the boat! Interesting…

Miles talking to Jacob seems pretty cool…
