Stallone To Do “Cliffhanger” Sequel?

Cliffhanger Header
First Rocky came back to the ring.  Then Rambo went back to the jungles.  Now it looks like rock climber Gabe Walker (yeah, I didn’t know the name either) may be heading back up the…Dam?

According to PR-inside.com, Sylvester Stallone is in talks with Sony studio execs about reviving his character from the 1993 hit film, Cliffhanger.  Apparently, there’s a script or story or idea (?) floating around called The Dam that would work.  Heck, maybe it was written as a sequel for Cliffhanger back in the day.  There was once a lot of talk about doing a sequel for this film but nothing ever came of it.

Cliffhanger, as you may or may not recall, was a Renny Harlin directed film about a climber (who’s trying to get over the fact that he dropped his friend’s girlfriend to her death) who becomes embroiled in a failed heist set in a U.S. Treasury plane flying through the Rocky Mountains.  Michael Rooker (who was also in the recent Jumper) and John Lithgow co-starred.  The film was a huge hit when it was released, making more than $250 million worldwide.

I for one would actually welcome a Cliffhanger sequel.  I’ve always enjoyed the film.  I liked it when it came out and it’s still fun to watch on occasion.  It doesn’t hold up as well as I would have liked, but I think the right story with this character could actually be pretty good.  I don’t think it would be a problem that they’ve waited so long to make the sequel.

Of course, one has to wonder if Stallone plans on making anything new ever again.  He’s been linked to more Rambo movies, a Death Wish remake, a remake of Bronson’s The Mechanic, and now this.  Surely there’s still a few original scripts floating around Hollywood somewhere…?

What do you think?  Good idea?  Bad idea?  Should Sly keep retreading some of his more popular stuff or maybe try to strike out with his new re-found fame and try to do something a little different?
