If you like Disney and sequels, 2011 is going to be huge. It also seems like such a long ways off, that this is a record for Pop Critics alerting you to news. Of course, you’ll forget it in a week, but that’s alright, at least it will be somewhere in the back of your mind.
The big news is that Pirates of the Caribbean doesn’t appear to be done. According to AICN and Slashfilm, the studio is planning to give us a 4th movie in the super box office successful franchise.
Slashfilm reports:
Disney has been developing a fourth film in the Pirates franchise following the release of At World’s End. Rumor has it that the new film will be a spin-off following Captain Jack Sparrow, the character played by Johnny Depp. Many have speculated that Depp will be on a journey to find either the lost city of Atlantis or a more contained budget-friendly search for the Fountain of Youth. I’m sure Disney is eyeing a late May, June or early July release as that was the release schedule for Black Pearl, World’s End and Dead Man’s Chest.
Sounds cool. It would be great to see a Pirates without a convoluted plot like the one that just confused the crap out of me in At the World’s End.
Along with Pirates, Disney is also working on Cars 2, which is reported to be in 3D, National Treasure 3 and Tron 3D. All of these are rumored to be released in 2011.
None of them, aside from Pirates, sound that exciting to me, I haven’t seen the second National Treasure yet and may not ever, but the idea of a new Tron could be interesting.

In the vein of nothing new coming out of Hollywood…
Seriously do we need another Pirates movie? The first one was great, but the second two…ugh! I liked both National Treasure movies, they were good matinee fun, so I guess I’d be up for a third, altho maybe not at the theater. Cars 2, DVD at best, Tron 2, probably the same.
Memo to Hollywood; I’ve got some great books that would be great movies, if you want to raid my library, you’re more than welcome.

Big Depp fan and loved the first couple of Pirates movies, but seriously - not necessary to do another. Just let that money-grubbing juggernaut die in peace…
Cars 2 - don’t mess with a good thing - please.

Did you say that back when Toy Story 2 was announced? You have to take into consideration a PIXAR sequel vs. a regular DISNEY sequel. Toy Story 2 was a superior movie to Toy Story 1, and in fact, IMO Toy Story 2 is one of Pixar’s best movies period.
As for National Treasure 3, they’re doing it strictly for money reasons. The movies are horrible, but hey, a lot of people watch them. Wanna complain about sequels? Complain about the audiences out there that provide a market for them–the market for them is actually bigger than the market for original stuff. That has been a trend for the last 20 years.
Tron 2 (or Tron 3D) has been in development for years, so that’s nothing new.
I like the idea of a new Pirates movie, but only if they don’t have any of that supernatural mumbo jumbo in it. What about a straight pirate movie? I wrote a pirate script that had some gory action in it, but there were no fighting pirate skeletons in it.
