Stopped watching: New Amsterdam, Unhitched
Two new shows this spring that I reviewed for you both came from Fox and both are no longer on my season pass list.
The first was the immortal New Amsterdam and the second was the comedy Unhitched, starring Rashida Jones from Office fame. You can read either review by clicking on the links in the previous sentence.
New Amsterdam stars John Amsterdam, a guy who had a spell put on him over 300 years ago that kept him immortal until he finds his one true love. In the first episode, he suffers a major heart attack, dies, comes back to life and walks out of an ER. Not surprisingly, the woman he is looking for caused the heart attack and is also a doctor at the hospital where he up and vanished.
I will say that I enjoyed a few of the twists early, like the fact that the guy running his bar is his son. I didn’t even see that coming. Perhaps because he didn’t speak to him at all like he was his child, but whatever. For me, the show got a bit boring, but I think it’s mainly due to the fact that almost every show out there it seems has to use a detective or law enforcement profession for their characters and there is just only so much crime solving that one can watch these days.
From Without a Trace, to CSI, to Life and hundreds of others…watching people on TV solve murder cases and mysterious disappearances…it’s just grown tired for me personally. The idea of immortal life is intriguing, but I just couldn’t see where they were going with it and bailed.
Next up on the chopping block was Unhitched, a comedy that is very trashy and sometimes funny, but with absolutely no heart and I really found myself disenchanted with everyone on screen. It’s hard to go from shows like The Office, or Scrubs, where the characters are easy to fall in love with, to something like Unhitched. I think I really only watched 2 episodes of this show, the third I had on while writing a few blogs, and you know if I turn a show on and then don’t watch it, it must not be very good!
Not really for me, and hence buh-bye!
Now, if you are looking for a good new show, then check out John Adams, which is actually replaying this week on a few other HBO stations I saw.
