The Friday Question - Patrick Swayze

We all heard the news about Patrick Swayze this week, that he has pancreatic cancer and is being treated for it right now. The survival rate for this horrible disease is just not very good so our thoughts and prayers go out to him.

There is no real word on whether or not he has the 5 weeks that the National Enquirer reported, or if he has a lot longer left, or that maybe he can beat it, but either way, to honor him we’re going to make Patrick Swayze the topic of our Friday Question.

And the question is:

What is your favorite Patrick Swayze movie?

I have to admit, other than a few of them, like Dirty Dancing and Ghost, I had a hard time thinking of movies I’ve seen him in. I just haven’t exactly been a huge Swayze fan really, so I went to IMDB to find his entire movie acting credits.

I found out I liked a few of this other films, like Red Dawn and Point Break.

And so if I’m going to answer the question, I’ll go with the one I’ve seen the most for one reason or another: Dirty Dancing.

A great cult hit, it’s on cable every weekend about 200 times and there is no beating the line “No one puts Baby in a corner.”

And there is that final dance scene that is just the best ever (except for maybe Save the Last Dance *wink* *wink*).

Of course, when he mouths the lyrics of the song to Baby, “…and I owe it all TO YOU!“…I just want to cringe.

So what about you guys? What’s your favorite Patrick Swayze movie?

Red Dawn all the way baby!

Oh, and I saw a newscast that quoted Swayze as saying the whole "imminent death" thing is just a rumor. He's responding to treatment and doing well. He's not dying any day now.

Never even heard of Grandview USA really...just looked it up...John and Joan Cusak are in it, why have I not seen it? :)

Point Break by far. Just a fun movie with one of the best chase scenes ever.

Roadhouse would be second. Come on, I know I am not the only one who likes it.

I may be strange, but To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar was my favorite Swayze movie. I think perhaps it's because it's the first movie I saw as a kid with him in it, and it was so funny.

I am going with Red Dawn with Roadhouse coming in second. Just watched part of Red Dawn a couple of weeks ago on cable. Been ages since I had seen it.

Red Dawn is a pretty good movie too. I also like The Outsiders as well. Can't forget about Youngblood either. Wow, there are a lot of good Swayze movies.

Oh yeah, and by all accounts, Patrick Swayze is a great guy. He has been married to the same woman since 1975 and is a good family man. This is very sad news. My thoughts and prayers are with him as well.

Roadhouse, because it has his recently deceased co-star, Jeff Healey in it. A fantastic, if unorthodox guitarist.

Red Dawn is also great commie killing fun. I originally saw this one in a theater full of rednecks in Albany, GA. Yeeehaw!

I also like the SNL skit he did with Chris Farley where they were auditioning to be Chippendale dancers.

I was going to go with Red Dawn which isn't a *good* movie, but will always hold a cheesy place in my heart. And Dirty Dancing is solid entertainment. But I'm going to have to agree with Adam. For me, Wong Foo is tops, partly because it has the advantage of Julie Newmar's short appearance (I'll always love you, Catwoman!)

As for SNL skits, the Chippendale's routine was good, but I preferred the Hans und Franz skit where one of the muscleheads (forget which one) had a crush on Swayze.

A couple of months ago, I saw scans of a Swayze comic. Awesome stuff. Here's a link.

Yeah, not a Swayze fan even though I have seen a few of his movies.

Hopefully he is doing better and that his cancer is responding to treatments.

I still think Red Dawn, but I would also like to submit the mini-series North and South which helped make him a star. And most of you probably don't remember, but Next Of Kin was a pretty big hit when it came out. I can't remember now if it was actually good or not.

Although Red Dawn was good, I actually liked another Dawn movie he made, Steel Dawn....one of those apocalyptic movies where people fight over water as a resource...

Next of Kin was pretty good. Liam Neeson with a southern accent was interesting :-) I have never seen Steel Dawn. I may have to check it out.
