The Friday Question - Twisty Endings

I almost went to bed without coming up with a Friday question and that would have been totally irresponsible on my part to deprive you of the reason your weekends get started off on the right foot.

For some reason, comic book questions, superheroes keep coming to mind, so I had to force myself to think up something different.

It didn’t take long to get inspiired from the episode of Lost last night and the way it ended.

What is your favorite movie with a surprising, OMG, twist ending?

This post is obviously going to contain some spoilers for people who haven’t seen the films, so if you would be so kind to identify the movie at the top of your comment so that people can skip it if needed.

My answer here may contain some spoilers too, so you’ve been warned!

There are many that have totally fooled me. A few of the ones recently that I’ve loved would be the first Saw movie (great stinking shock at the end, did NOT see it coming) and of course The Sixth Sense.

I still love The Shawshank Redemption ending, because they really, REALLY got us on that one. The rock being thrown at the poster, and then hearing it echo as it bounced down the tunnel…genius man.

But for my answer, I’m going to go with The Usual Suspects.

I’ve never been so completely frozen with my jaw dropped to the floor as I was at the end of this movie. Who is Keyser Soze? Well, we find out and the way we did was so brilliant. Kevin Spacey was awesome, and to do the revelation with a simple view of his feet suddenly going from crooked to straight was awesome.

I would definitely have to say The Sixth Sense. My jaw literally (well, ok, figuratively) hit the floor when the ring fell out of her hand. Although The Usual Suspects was pretty awesome too. I also thought Frailty had a good "twisty" ending.

And now for a confession. I am embarrassed to say that I have never seen Shawshank. For some reason it has eluded me and I don't know why b/c I have heard over and over again how awesome it is. Therefore, I skipped over whatever you said about it.

Well, The Sting jumps to mind. - "There's been a mistake! I want my money back!"

A Boy and His Dog is a good one too. - "Well, I'd certainly say she had marvelous judgment, Albert, if not particularly good taste." :)

Angel Heart had a good twist at the end although there were clues throughout. - "Alas... how terrible is wisdom when it brings no profit to the wise, Johnny?"

The awful The Village had a twist but I was so bored with it by then I didn't really care. I won't even bother to quote from it.

The Village was good, but yeah, not anything in a Top 10 list I'd have.

You've got to a least see The Sting Mike, it's a Redford and Newman classic. Next you're going to tell me you haven't seen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. It's got sort of a twist ending too - "Oh, good. For a moment there I thought we were in trouble."

Angel Heart has Mickey Rourke being slimy, De Niro being sinister and Lisa Bonet being nekkid. You should catch it on DVD for sure.

A Boy and His Dog is kind of a cult sci-fi classic indie film with a young, pre-Miami Vice, Don Johnson and Tiger, the dog from the Brady Bunch, in the title roles.

It's almost a cliche', but the Sixth Sense is the easy choice. Never saw it coming. I had totally forgot about the Sting and A Boy and his dog (great movie btw), those are good too. I actually liked the Village and the ending was a surprise. The Usual Suspects is one of my favorites, but I wasn't shocked by the ending, same with Shawshank, altho with that one I'd read the book previous, so I knew the ending.

Other notables: the Empire Strikes Back ("Luke, I am your father" as a kid that one got me.), Saw 1 and Saw 2. One other that comes out later this year is Shutter Island (atho it has a different movie title) that one should surprise a few people.

Yeah, not seen ANY of those...my dad just didn't make an effort to show me old movies when I was a kid I guess...but Redford and Newman sound like a movie I'd want to see.

I too recommend The Sting, not so much for the ending as just being a good film.

The Sixth Sense and The Usual Suspects were easy choices, although I can't say I was that surprised in either. Still brilliant.

I don't know. I'm going to have to think about this one for a while.

How about Impostor, the straight to DVD with Gary Sinise? I thought I had it figured out, then I second guessed, then I changed my mind and .......
More recently, War with Jason Stratham and Jet Li.
That role reversal at the end - really didn't see that one coming, but it sure explained the motivations of Jet Li's character. All along, I was thinking, what is this guy trying to do?
I'd say The Sixth Sense, but that would get repetitive :)
