TV review: ‘Unhitched’ FOX (2008)

I checked out the new FOX comedy, Unhitched on Sunday night mainly because of Rashida Jones (The Office) and it being created by the Farrelly brothers.

Peter and Bobby Farrelly are responsible for films such as Dumb and Dumber, There is Something About Mary, Fever Pitch, Shallow Hal and Stuck on You. Some of those are classics now, some weren’t super successful.

But with those two behind Unhitched, we gave it a chance and wanted to see if Rashida Jones could find a career after her brief stint on The Office as Jim Halpert’s girlfriend (before Pam).

The series is about four people suddenly single after being divorced or separated from their significant others for one reason or another.

Well, the show was fairly crass and cheesy and the opening scene was pretty jaw-dropping. If you remember in Something About Mary how Ben Stiller zipped up a sensitive appendage in a bathroom, this scene was just about as awkward.

Let’s just say it involves a guy and girl on a first day, where the girl asks the guy to “take her like a silver-backed gorilla” (after watching two such creatures mate on one of her rescue videos). Umm…alright. And then her pet monkey strips and gets into the action from behind on the unsuspecting guy.

Ack…it was a bit over the top. If you want to know the level of humor in the show, this little snippet below will kind of spell it out for you:

After the monkey jumps him from behind, the guy (played by Craig Bierko) suddenly has a pretty torn up rear end. The next day he is lying on a coffee table while his buddy, who is a doctor, patches him up whilst under a sheet to block anyone from seeing what is going on.

His other friend is watching, amused, and then Rashida Jones shows up, also amused and shocked.

Then they start asking him when he’s going to sign his divorce papers and why he wont take off the wedding ring. He points out that it just WONT come off, and if they want to try and yank it off, go for it.

That leads to probably the funniest line of the pilot. The doctor, still under the sheet (now shaving Bierko’s…umm…posterior), exclaims:

Please, nobody pull that finger.

I laughed, I admit it, even if it’s totally crude and high school-ish humor.

The entire show is like that, but some of the jokes are pretty clever, albeit it very dirty in nature.

We may give it another go, but I think this one has a short life-span in this house.

  1. I, too, tuned in for the exact same reasons. Dumb and Dumber was smarter than you realize and Rashida Jones was good in The Office. So why not?

Well, I’ll tell you why not. It wasn’t that great and wasn’t that funny. Even the crudeness wasn’t funny crudeness. I’m willing to give it a few more shows just in case because pilots are rarely that great anyway.

    We’ll just wait and see.

  2. The characters are hard to follow, and the story doesn’t make sense.
The jokes feel rehersed, and are rarely funny.
Unhitched reminds me of “The Winner from last year, but that seemed funnier.

    This show doesn’t work.

  3. Agreed Yarko, we watched the second week and I’m pretty sure that was the last one :)
