What to rent: DVD releases for 3/25/08
Not a huge week in DVDs unless you love TV shows, horror films, the subject of the afterlife and high definition calibration tools.
Woo! Let’s jump right into all the DVD shenanigans.
Party of Five: Season 3
I just have to say, I absolutely LOVED Party of Five and so did the three guys I roomed with for awhile in the mid-90s. We’d watch it every week while eating $5 large pizzas from Peter Piper Pizza.
Now is released the third season of the show, and if you were a fan at all, you likely will recall this was the year of the big Bailey Intervention episode which was talked about for weeks after. Me and the three roommates all tried to hide our watery eyes from each other when Claudia attempts to convince Bailey that he needs help. (buy)
The Mist
An original short story by Stephen King, I read The Mist after the movie hit theaters and decided to wait until DVD to see it, so you can guarantee I’ll be out this week reserving my own copy.
I’m pretty sure things got changed up from book to big screen, but the story of a mysterious mist the floats over town, hiding evil creatures is too good to pass up.
There is a regular and 2-disc special edition. (buy)
Wristcutters: A Love Story
Heard about this movie a long time ago, but it was an indie flick and probably limited to the one art house it town. A good rating on IMDB of 7.5, this film is about a special afterlife for people who have committed suicide. It’s classified as a comedy drama fantasy romance.
A strange plot for sure, but one that sounds super interesting. (buy)
The Kite Runner
This little indie film was up for Best Original Score at the Oscars this year and has an almost 8.0 rating on IMDB, which is darned good.
We’ll likely be adding this to our Blockbuster queue for a later viewing. (buy)
Day Break: The Complete Series
The ABC series starring Taye Diggs, which I enjoyed until it got canceled after only 6 episodes aired. Well, all 13 are available now and from what I can gather from user reviews online, the series completed nicely, so perhaps the answers are there.
I may have to check this out as well. (buy)
Digital Video Essentials: HD-DVD and Blu-Ray
This appears to be something all HD TV owners need and it’s a high definition disc that helps you calibrate your television and audio to look and sound the best it can. I’ve heard about a show on HDNET that does the exact same thing but have never taken the time to find it.
I personally would like to try out calibrating my TV, who knows how much better it could look. (Blu-Ray, HD-DVD)
