Graphic Novel review: “Civil War”

So you may know that my newfound love for graphic novels just began not too long ago and I’ve reviewed most of them for you guys, but so far nothing has come equal to the one I just finished.

The only one I’ve read that I haven’t written a review for yet is Watchmen, and perhaps because it’s over 20 years old I don’t feel the need to. It was such a defining and landscape changing graphic novel, that I don’t think my limited experience in this genre could do it justice.

But I’m going to attempt one for Civil War, because I was just blown away by the scope and scale of the story and the action contained within.

According to Wikipedia, Civil War was a Marvel comics crossover event that took place over a limited seven-issue publishing. It was written by Mark Millar, who also wrote Wanted, which is coming out in theaters pretty soon.

The story begins with a huge accident in a neighborhood, where a reality TV series starring some young superheroes causes a mass explosion resulting in the deaths of innocent men, women and children.

The people and government have had enough of these unchecked heroes. While they help humanity, the side effects of their battles and antics can be devastating.

The government orders that all heroes be unmasked and brought together as one group, to be trained and sent out as soldiers of America in simple terms.

Some like it, some don’t. Captain America leads a group of superheroes who oppose the initiative, while Iron Man heads the side of the government.

There is a split and a civil war between the two sides ensues. Heroes switch loyalties, betray each other and do battle on an epic scale.

This was one of the more intense and exciting graphic novels I’ve read so far. The action and twists and turns was breathtaking. Seeing all these superheroes in one novel, all doing battle and mingling was astounding.

My only beef with it is that I missed all the stories leading up to it and am going to have to track them down to catch up. The problem with reading something like this is missing out on background information between all the characters.

Definitely a solid graphic novel, the best I’ve seen so far.

And I wanted to thank our devoted read, The Cap’n, for sending this to me as a gift. Truly a great find!
