Well, last night’s Smallville was a fantastic episode, so much so that it deserves its own little recap here on Pop Critics.
Spoilers abound as always in the recaps here, so beware!
Well, as we pretty much knew was going to happen, since spoilers for the show were everywhere, and even the CW’s own advertisements did nothing to hide it, Lionel Luthor kicked the bucket last night.
Of course, he had help in dying, as his own flesh and blood Lex Luthor shoved him outside the window about 40 stories up in Luthorcorp.
It happened within the first 5 minutes of the show, so they wanted to get it out of the way obviously. A quick death for Lionel, but an honorable one as even in the final seconds, he was trying to throw Lex off the path of The Traveler, whom we all know is Clark.
Lex was after the second key to a safe deposit box in Zurich, Germany, which holds the secret to controlling Clark. What could possibly be in there?
The key of course wasn’t with Lionel, but his female cohort, Gina, told Lex he was last seen in the basement of The Daily Planet. Of course, Chloe has the key!
On a side note, considering how much Chloe, Clark and Lionel work together, and Lana protecting Clark all the time, you’d think Lex would pretty much be 99% sure Clark is The Traveler. But whatever.
Lex gets the key back, and finally has the means to open that box.
In the meantime, Gina is tracking down a photo that Jimmy and Lois have that shows Lex as the killer. She locked those two up in a freezer, Lois gets shot AGAIN, but they had already uploaded the video to the Isis foundation where Chloe is working on it.
So Gina shows up there, knocks Chloe out and then erases the video. Of course Clark shows up, Gina hides and overhears EVERYTHING about Clark being The Traveler, having powers, etc.
You know that means she’s going to die. And it doesn’t take long as a silent assassin poisons her and seats her inside her vehicle.
But it wasn’t before she left a message for Lex telling him that she knows who The Traveler is.
Looks like Lex made a big mistake. He wanted her dead, but now he’ll have to wait to find out what the heck she knew.
And the entire time Lex is seeing his young, pure self in his head, and ends up throwing the kid into his roaring fire, saying “You make me weak!”
Wow. Not only does Lex kill his father, but also the last bit of his inner goodness. He’s truly sinking into the abyss of evil.
The coming weeks look good, especially next week.
What did you guys think of the episode?

“Not only does Lex kill his father, but also his imaginary dead brother.”
That’s tough… in so many different ways.
Yeah, only Lex Luthor could kill someone imaginary.
It wasn’t Julian, his dead brother…it was Lex when he was a boy. Didn’t you see the very first episode (season 1) with Lionel and Lex as a boy in the helicopter on their way to Smallville before the comets hit? Or the episode this season where Clark went inside Lex’s mind to locate Kara and ran into the child version of Lex scared of the evil adult Lex? Or maybe the last episode would ring a bell when Lex is retelling Gina (his femmebot) of overhearing his dad’s conversation regarding Veritas.
Or did you just happen to watch this one episode of Smallville? It wouldn’t make any sense for Lex to “kill” his imaginary dead brother when the writers were trying to show Lex’s descent into evil, meaning he has to destroy whatever else is good inside him. The writers portrayed that goodness in Lex as a little boy; nicely done.
Credits to the writers of this episode; much much better than the previous episodes…last three seasons really. Maybe because it had something to do with Clark becoming the Superman we all love and hold dear and not some wimpy, love-sick puppy. Best acting by Michael Rosenbaum and Tom Welling by far.
Ah… that’s makes more sense. Thanks smf, we understand now!
Yeah I was going to correct ya, but smf got to it first… GREAT EPISODE last night!! Lex rocked as the evil bad a**. Cant wait till next week!!!
Thanks smf, I even knew it was himself last night but it was a late night writing session and I totally had a brain fart.
But thanks for not going overboard in correcting me
I agree though, the whole idea of his inner goodness portrayed as a child was great, and the tossing of that goodness into the fire very spooky.
aw Mike, I wouldn’t call it overboard…just a passion for the series! or is it for the two male actors…I have a hard time deciphering which…
Yeah, I know…and I appreciate the correction. Sometimes I have a lot going on upstairs, I forget things and mistakes happen. Not to mention I usually don’t do recaps about Smallville
It’s also been a few weeks since it was on, and I just totally biffed it on on that crazy little kid.
Next week looks great!
