X-Files 2 finally gets title: “I Want To Believe”
With the opening of X-Files 2 on July 25th, it seemed like the decision on an official title for the movie was starting to cut it pretty close. But finally today, we get a title and it’s one that relates to the very beginning of the series.
If you remember Fox Mulder’s office and the poster in the background with a picture of a UFO on it, the famous phrase below it read: “I want to believe.”
Hence the name of the new movie. You can see the original poster to the right. It’s like a staple among X-Files fanatics.

“It’s a natural title,” Chris Carter said in a telephone interview Tuesday during a break from editing the film. “It’s a story that involves the difficulties in mediating faith and science. `I Want to Believe.’ It really does suggest Mulder’s struggle with his faith.”
The title was actually picked out since the beginning, but Carter and company wanted to make sure it was a marketable one. I guess they think it is.
Personally, I think it’s appealing to X-Files fans, but others may see it a bit…weird. The first movie was labeled “Fight the Future“, so this one is in keeping with the style they’ve gone with in naming the films.
But “I Want To Believe” doesn’t instill a lot of excitement or anticipation to me, so we’ll have to see how well it goes over. I like it myself, just because I know the film is going to deal with Mulder’s beliefs that have plagued him since the beginning of the show, so it all makes sense to me.
The plot of X-Files 2 has been kept under lock and key, and only a few people on production know the entire story. Check out the lengths they went through to keep scripts from being leaked:
“We went to almost comical lengths to keep the story a secret,” Carter said. “That included allowing only the key crew members to read the script, and they had to read it in a room that had video cameras trained on them. It was a new experience.”
