The American Idol Results show for week 13 of Season 7 live performances finally brought us to our last two contestants - the two Idol hopefuls who will meet on stage and battle for our votes to determine who will be the next American Idol.
If you missed the performance show on Tuesday night you can always watch the performance videos and read our recaps right here:
There wasn’t a lot of need for extra drama in last night’s show. They didn’t bother trying to do a bottom two or anything. Instead, we spent time watching video of all of the final three contestants in their hometown visits being adulated by everyone from the mayors to the soccer moms who were thrusting their babies to the contestants hoping, I assume, for a picture or some faint whisper of praise for their child. As always, it was bizarre to see grown adults treat these pseudo-stars with such difference while young teenage girls wept and held up signs.
As far as the elimination went, everything was pretty much a foregone conclusion, I think. I placed the contestants in the following order as far as ranking how I think they did overall in their performances on Tuesday:
- David Cook
- Syesha Mercado
- David Archuleta
However, I made it quite clear that I felt that the two Davids would be the last two contestants standing. For the second week in a row I actually got it right. Syesha was voted out.
Why Syesha Mercado Lost American Idol
One could certainly argue that the judges helped sway the voters in making the decision as to who would be in the final two. Whether or not the judges are supposed to remain unbiased judges of the talent before them is something I do not know. I do know that they’ve made it quite clear all season long that they wanted David Archuleta in the finals. Recently, they’ve also actively campaigned for David Cook. Syesha, on the other hand, has gotten the short end of the stick on many occasions, often when I felt she didn’t deserve it. In fact, I felt the judges were unduly harsh on her on Tuesday and too soft on David Archuleta.
Honestly, though, the fan favorites have been the two Davids for some time now. Syesha has been in the bottom rankings time after time. How she’s managed to skate by week after week was a miracle unto itself. She is an incredibly talented girl, but even she knew that her time was up. The final two for this season was determined several weeks ago just as it’s been determined ahead of time in many seasons past. I’m not saying the voting was rigged or anything - simply that the favorites were very clear. Syesha never built the fan base or won over the audience the way the two Davids did. She impressed the audience enough to keep her in the contest longer than anyone else, but not longer than the favorites. She had a good run and certainly has nothing to be ashamed about.

If you’re keeping score with the little side contest Jeff (from Static ThinkBox) and I have going… Jeff has had trouble keeping up with his posts with a new baby in the house. He did contact me to let me know that his choice to be voted out was Syesha Mercado. So, once again, we both voted the same. And, once again, we were both correct. I guess we’re on a roll…
The current score is below (still not sure why I even bother).

I think everyone knew it would Syesha, as well as Syesha herself. Now if we could get enough adults voting Cook might be able to pull off a win.
Yeah, this should come as a shock to no one, although I was really hoping David A would get the boot.
The finale really doesn’t matter all that much, but I do think David C will be better off not winning. I’m actually tempted to vote for David A, just to help that along.

Well, like I mentioned in my last article, I don’t think Cook is going to be hurt by winning. I think the producers are smart enough by now (especially after seeing what happened with Daughtry) to know that they can’t just force someone to sing crappy pop ballads and expect to have a hit artist.
I think if Cook wins they’ll do exactly the same thing they’ll do if he loses. They’ll put together a band for him and follow the lead that Daughtry has already established. Win or lose he’ll sell the same number of records.
Kelly won and she did pretty dang good for herself, so I have faith.
At this point, I’m actually thinking of voting FOR Cook, so that ridiculous little Disneyland singer who doesn’t move his arms when he walks, doesn’t win
