Could Matthew McConaughey Be Captain America?

After Marvel’s big announcement yesterday of their upcoming slate of movies over the next, oh, millenium or so, it’s no big surprise that talk has already started about who could possibly play one of the most coveted roles in their upcoming pics - that of Captain America.

Well, Cinema Blend this morning says the rumor is that Matthew McConaughey is on the short list of actors the studio is most interested in. As Cinema Blend points out, however, McConaughey might possess the looks of a beefcake American hero, but he’s hardly the archetype for which Captain America stands.

Needless to say, no contracts have been signed or official talks begun. The movies were only announced yesterday so it’s likely we could have a pretty long wait before finding out who the studio is actually interested in. Somehow I doubt McConaughey will end up being the actor they go with.

What do you think? Could Matthew McConaughey be a good Captain America? If not, who do you think should play him?

  1. Ugh, blech.

He’s got the physique I guess, but that southern drawl doesn’t seem like Captain America.

  2. Nice article Jason…. hmm, well if you saw Reign of Fire, you know he could buff up to play the role of Capn, but I would agree with Mo about his voice and accent….

I still struggle in seeing anyone currently play this role… I cant envision a good current actor…

  3. This would certainly intrigue Tracy to go see it, but I agree with you guys about his accent. Just does not seem like the right fit.

  4. If they go with McConaughey, the movie will inevitably be all cheese. Back to the drawing boards, studio execs.

  5. Hmmm what about Thomas Jane… though he was already the Punisher, he wont be in the next installment of it…

  6. “Thank you for coming in. We’ll call you…. NEXT!”

  7. @AnaDVR - LOL - “But I was just about to play my bongos…”

  8. @ Jason: “Been there, seen that. Next!”

  9. Tom Jane would be pretty good in the role Cap’n. Another name I heard was Ryan Phillipe.

  10. @ Ana - hilarious :)

  11. @Steven ya know, Ryan Phillipe could be a really good choice. He would need to be bigger and a bit taller, but I think thats a really good choice, nice suggesstion..

    @AnaDVR LOL….

  12. Ryan Phillippe? If we want our Captain America to be slightly feminine and mumbly…

  13. LOL… mumbly…lolol

  14. McConaughey?

That’s almost as bad as Michael Keaton as Batman. I know a lot of people thought he was great, but I want my dark, brooding vigilante to be able to scare me, not make me laugh at him in his latex fetish-wear while I do rattails with his cape.

McConaughey as Cap might even be worse. He’s laconic. He’s a bs artist. He’s not a super soldier.

I’d suggested Aaron Eckhart the other day and still like him for the role. I could also see (this is a bit more of a stretch) Peter Krause. He’d have to bulk up, but he can handle drama + dry comedy and has a deep, commanding voice. Jon Hamm, maybe. He’s got everything required for the role, but for being dark haired.

My last one, guaranteed to elicit a chuckle or two (maybe followed by a nod of interest) is Mark-Paul Gosselaar. That’s right. Zack Frakin’ Morris.

  15. Oh, and crap. How could I forget Jason Street?
    Scott Porter = Steve Rogers.

  16. Interesting suggestions Porter, but I’m not sure any of them fit the bill in my mind. I seriously can’t think of anyone either. Maybe they’d have to do a national search for an unknown?

  17. If you want an older Capt. America Viggo Mortenson.
If not for the Bourne movies I would never thought about Albert FinneyN no Matthew Damon could possibly do it. Or maybe they will throw a curve ball and cast Terrance Howard.
