Leaked Plot Details of Ron Moore’s New Fox Show “Virtuality”
Mike first told us about Ron Moore’s new Fox show Virtuality when it got picked up last month. As you may remember, Ron Moore is the closest thing that sci-fi TV has to a rock star. He was plucked from obscurity by Gene Roddenberry to work on Star Trek: TNG and went on to revolutionized the medium with his dark, character-driven Battlestar Galactica update.
Now Moore is bringing us Virtuality. What we knew about it when Mike first brought it to our attention, however, is not what we now know about it thanks to some leaked script pages that io9 got a hold of. The script pages lay out some pretty bold story and character development for a network show. It’s starting to look like this show could be the real deal.
At first glance the show looks like it’s all about a group of astronauts who are stuck in an inter-stellar spaceship for a ten year mission into deep space and have nothing better to do than to spend time in a holodeck. Visions of ST:TNG immediately come to mind. However, the script pages which io9 got their hands on seem to make the show much more multi-layered and twisted even. The pages are “casting sides,” for actors auditioning for roles in the series, but they appear to be taken from the actual pilot script.
You’ll probably want to read a complete breakdown, but the parts that stood out to me was the character of the “green eyed monster” an apparition that appears to all of the astronauts inside their VR fantasy modules, and is the literal manifestation of the ‘computer bug’ in the system. He kills each in gruesome ways and even rapes the ship’s female computer whiz, Billie. This is definitely not ST:TNG.
There’s a lot of details that I suggest you get straight from the source. Check out the article on io9 to read all about where Ron Moore might be headed with this story. It’s definitely worth checking out.
