Spider-Man 4 and 5 to Shoot Back to Back?

With a summer full of superhero movies and Marvel planning their superhero slate for the next several years, I was beginning to wonder when we’d hear something concerning the reigning boxoffice superhero.  Well, we have word now that the next two Spider-Man movies might be filmed back to back.

The last we heard screenwriter James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) was hired to write a fourth installment in the lucrative franchise.  Then the writer’s strike happened and not much else was heard.  Now it seems that Vanderbilt has turned in his screenplay and the studio thinks the story arc is such that they can split it into two films with just a little more work and film the whole thing all at one time.

Simultaneously shooting multiple installments of big franchises has become increasingly common of late. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed all at one time, as were the second and third films in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.  Also the two halves of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be shot in this manner.

Of course, even if this rumor is true there’s no guarantee that director Sam Raimi or star Tobey Maguire will be back for either film.  Neither of the two are contractually obligated to return at this point and both have other projects on their dance cards.  Raimi’s currently working on Drag Me to Hell for next year and a Jack Ryan reboot for Paramount aiming for summer 2010 release, while Maguire is attached to produce and possibly star in Robotech for Warner Brothers.

  1. I still need to watch Spidey 3 - it’s sitting on my shelf and I have yet to pop it into the Blu-ray player…

  3. I’m not sure there’s a need for Spidey 4-5.  3 never looked all that compelling, so I never saw it either.

  4. yeah I have SP3 on blue ray too, haven’t watched it.  Heard it was boring.  Although 1and 2 were ok.

  6. I didn’t think 3 was any worse than 2.

  7. Not any worse than 2??? OMG!

Spiderman 2 was one of the best superhero movies ever, and #3 was crap.

I’m surprised we are off on this Jason, we usually align pretty well.

#3 had nothing that made #2 great.

  8. LOL - I knew that would get someone riled up.  :)

  9. Was 3 the one when Tobey was dancing? Not good.

  10. I’m with Jason… what was wrong with 3?  In fact, it was better than 2.  Everybody says 2 was better than 1, and 3 was worse than them all.  this is due to too many charecters in the film, they knew it was the last one and wanted to squeeze in everyone.  4 and 5 would be great ONLY IF they get Tobey to do it, and they dont throw in every baddie Spiderman ever faced, have in depth charecter development.

  11. I hope these are much better than than the third one…one of the worst movies I ever wasted my time and money on LOL

  12. Cap’n, I love ya, but 3 was in no way better than the first two. It was just not good. Like Jina said, the dancing stuff by Tobey, but it was all these characters, too much going, it didn’t have the heart that #2 had.

The scene on the subway in #2 when the people of the city try to defend him, when he doesn’t think anyone cares…that was amazingly touching.

#3 was just a crazy superhero movie without the same great writing.

  13. Yeah me too. I prefer to the 2 than 3…
