The Office finale recap: “Goodbye, Toby”

Thank you Office for an excellent, twisty-turny season finale.

Is Toby really gone? The last shot we get of him is his escort out of the building by Michael AND the old security guard.

Hilarious. In fact, there were so many funny scenes and moments in this episode, I’m going to have to watch it a few more times.

One of the greatest threads in this episode was Dwight “hazing” the new girl Holly by telling her Kevin was mentally challenged. The great part about it is that Kevin didn’t act any different than he usually does. He’s just THAT way.

Michael is so happy this is Toby’s last day, he decides to throw the biggest party ever. And Phyllis does it because Angela is sick of last minute changes.

And true to form, it has nothing to do with Toby, it’s a celebration meant for Michael himself. And the exit interview was classic. Mike had all kinds of stuff to tell Toby, a rock to give him, etc., but the new HR girl and Pam sitting in prevented him from releasing all kinds of pent up anger.

Let’s talk about Holly a bit. She was a great addition. Apparently she gets Michael and they hit it off, thanks to some good advice from Jim to Michael about taking it slow. Don’t kiss her on the first day!

The self-restraint and maturity from Michael was pretty amazing, something we rarely see. But even when he couldn’t help himself and let SOMETHING out, she got it and laughed. She made jokes back to him, even ridiculous Yoda impersonations.

It was so nice and sweet to see Michael finding a girl meant for him. And that’s what made it so painful to see stinking Jan pregnant. Just when things get good for him, that evil relationship returns packing a child.

Of course, it’s not his as one would assume. Jan abhors Mike so much, she went to a SPERM BANK to get a father. Unbelievable. And if that’s not enough, she has the audacity to ask Michael to come to lamaze class with her!

I was praying he would just walk away…but he has some weird sense of nobility, plus he totally missed Holly’s “dessert” queue, so he calls Jan back later and tells her he’ll see her in the morning.

Ugh! Michael!

In other stories, Jim was going to use the party to propose to Pam and asks Phyllis to bring in fireworks. If you remember, they had dinner on the roof a few years back while Dwight set of fireworks in the background. Jim called it their first date.

But before he can recreate the magic, Andy steals ALL his thunder and makes a shocking proposal to Angela in front of everyone, INCLUDING Andy’s parents!

And that’s not even the real shocking part. That comes later when Phyllis walks back into the office to put away some party stuff and catches ANGELA and DWIGHT having sex over in accounting!

Awesome!

So Jim doesn’t ask Pam to marry him, which she confesses to the camera disappointed her. She’s also gone for the summer in New York for an art school she got accepted into, so what will happen there?

Perhaps the best and most fulfilling event to take place last night was the temp Ryan getting arrested for fraud. He’d been double-entering in orders, both in their system and on the web, making it look like they were doing WAY more business than they really did.

My wife either thought she heard, or said it would be a great idea, if Ryan ends up back in Scranton next season, under Jim and working back at his old job.

Sweet, sweet justice.

What did you guys think of the episode? Favorite lines?

How about this one: Holly to Michael, about Kevin in her car:

“I should go…I gotta buckle him in.”

Did you like Holly? Did you feel bad for Michael? What about Dwight and Angela? Will you miss Toby? Is he truly gone?

  1. First of all, classic episode!  I’m so depressed that that was the last episode for a while.

My favorite line was when Michael calls Jim into his office to help him with his M3P to make a mix tape for Holly that says two things: 1. Welcome to Scranton, and 2. I love you.

    Awesome!

  2. this was a great episode! the look on dwight’s face when he said it was his fault after the proposal broke my heart. and michael singing was awesome. and the money in the shoe. so gross!

  3. This was a very good episode.  It started slow so it was a pleasant surprise.  The bits with Kevin were great.  I like that Michael still listens to MP3 bits and not he whole song.  U2 from Scranton, classic.  Bummer, just read the blog from the show and Toby is really gone, but Paul Lieberstein will still write for the show.

  4. The money in the shoe almost felt like a hat tip to ‘Get Smart’, with the shoe phone.  Maybe not, but it struck me that way.

Great finale, of course now we have to wait for Jim and Pam to get engaged in some other crazy fashion.  The waiting is the hardest part…wise words Tom Petty.  ;-)

  5. Maybe Toby is gone because his storyline has just run its course. He’s annoyed Michael for as long as possible, and can never get Pam, so it’s just time.

  6. Ryan doing the perp walk. Yes, karmic justice in action.

Holly the new HR lady is perfect for Michael but his toxic relationship with Jan will spoil things.

Andy is a moron and Jim is afraid of commitment.

  7. I actually am bummed that Andy was so underused this season.

  8. I am going to miss Toby.  Ryan annoyed me, I hope he has the spinoff.  I won’t be watching if he is in it.

  9. Ryan’s spin off will be entitled “Soap on a Rope” :)

I liked Andy’s character. I just think he was misused with the Angela thing.
