The rumor mill is always happy to churn out names of stars who are supposedly at the top of the list for some role or other. However, the most recent rumor is interesting because it comes from Latino Review which is usually pretty good with this sort of thing and because it makes a lot of sense.
Latino Review says they have a trusted source at Marvel who says Marvel has a short list of actors they would like to play Captain America in their 2011 tent pole, The First Avenger: Captain America, and at the top is none other than Leonardo DiCaprio. Following closely behind is Brad Pitt (whose name has previously circulated for 2010’s Thor). If this rumor is true it would certainly continue Marvel’s brand new trend of “casting up” for their blockbusters.
DiCaprio certainly sounds like the kind of guy a studio would want to play Captain America. On paper he’s pretty much perfect for the role. Now, I say that without knowing all that much about the comic book character of Captain America. I’m sure fans of the comic would have plenty to say. But the fact remains that DiCaprio is a fine actor and is highly bankable.
It seems to me that Brad Pitt might be a tad bit too old to play Captain American, but I’m not sure if that’s the case or not. I think he might make a better choice as Thor if the studio feels compelled to put him in one or the other.
Keep in mind this is still in the very early rumor stage and it’s far from a done deal. Heck, DiCaprio is already attached to half the projects in Hollywood and he just signed on to play the founder of Atari. Who knows if he could even fit it in his schedule. At the same time, the success of Marvel’s other films could certainly get a few actors to think about rearranging their schedules. After all, who wouldn’t want the chance to play a superhero in a quality film that’s sure to be highly successful?

I just don't like it. Unless they're going to completely skip over his origin story, even Leo is too old. They should find a good, young actor and groom him.
I'm still hoping for Scott Porter (and not just because we share a last name!) He's young enough to pull off a teenage recruit, and athletic enough for the role. And his work on FNL has been amazing.
Can you imagine an Avengers movie with Downey Jr., Norton, DiCaprio and Pitt? That would be insanity.
Yeah - the question is - can Marvel keep them? If they fumble their actor contracts like their director contracts…ugh
I dont like it either….. Decaprio I cant see at all doing this… not a representation of how I imagine Captain America, large guy, sculptured leader, brooding voice…. I cant see it…
Well I dunno if Mo's going to post any other rumors or not, but aside from Marvel fumbling their director contract (JF), they also have done a pretty good job at miffing Norton on not giving him accolades and credit for certain aspects of the Hulk (itsd why you dont see him doing many promos for tyhe Hulk. So Marvel might have 2 great launches, and now they might frakkin ruin it!
Part of those accolades Norton wants are for his “rewrite” of Zak Penn's script. Even though the WGA arbitration committee recently decided he hadn't made a significant enough contribution to it to warrant a credit.
I love Norton for a lot of reasons, but he can be a bit of a prima donna.
Apparently he did a ton of collaboration to re-write a ton of the script as well as a bunch of personal time to do a lot of editing as well. He is not happy with marvel not giving him credit on those items…I'm hopin Marvel makes amends with him and JF so they can prfoceeed with some killer sequels…
I know he says that, and he might have done a lot of editing work, but the way the WGA arbitrates credit disputes is pretty detailed. Three separate writers are selected for each dispute. They work anonymously - they don't even know who the other two arbitrators are - and review a crapload of drafts and documentation to determine what percent of the script has been contributed by each writer.
Here's screenwriter John August on how it works (and how the WGA is looking to change it subtly.)
Now, I don't know with 100% certainty that the arbitration committee didn't screw this up and screw Norton out of his credit, but I'm inclined to think they didn't.
Oh…. didnt know that was how it worked. Thats a good link actually, thanks for including that. Maybe he has a hangup on punctuation, and was adding commas like crazy throughout the script?!? I dunno, I pretty much hear what you might be hearing on wht he claims, and he is not happy with marvel at the moment and its why we didnt see him doing a ton of hulk promo's… like you said I hope he's not being a pre-madonna and allowign others to get credit on the movie creation as well.
He may not have done a ton of promo work, but he did do that *awesome* bit on Kimmel.
a “pre-madonna” - lol
That's point worthy!
Very interesting stuff. I had no idea so much work went into deciding who wrote what and how much credit and residuals those individuals get.
I wonder what would happen if we applied those same rules to this site…lol
@R.A somethings wrong with my browser here at work I no longer have options to reply to your response (or perhaps the pop critics dont want me to), but yeah the kimmel bit was a riot with that little Hulk guy…
I just liked when Guillermo started to cry, and then hugged Norton. That was awesome!
If we applied those same rules here, I think you'd be a millionaire!
That means I could buy a million rubber duckies from the $1 store and fill up the pool with them (if I had a pool).
You could just use the bathtub.
Genuis!
Wasn't Troy like that? Who was the dude in Fast and Furious and other bad movies I never saw, the blonde guy, he'd be ok as Capt America, assuming he can act.
Vanilla Ice?
Was he in that movie? Well I meant the actor not the poser. Paul Walker or something
No Vanilla Ice - i was just being funny. Now it's not funny anymore.
It was Paul Walker, although alot of people wouldnt agree, he would be a good Capn America…I've said it since day one!
See, I knew you were old…
Scott Porter is a good actor from what I've seen, but I don't buy him in the role either.
Paul Walker couldn't act his way out of a paper bag.
Well, I don't know enough about Norton's work on this film to know if he deserved a credit, but the WGA has been having some issues on this matter for a while now. I have yet to hear anyone say they didn't screw over George Clooney on the Leatherheads script credit. I mean, the guy dropped out as a voting member over the whole thing.
I could easily see them screwing someone else over including Norton.
Well I was born yesterday so I'm only 1 day old….
Thats because he's portraying someone who is hyper-ventilating!!!
Ah - so it's not from THE day 1, if from your day 1…
Paul Walker is the paper bag…I think they call that method acting
If it was wet maybe he could. Honestly I never saw him besides movie trailers.
You're so lucky.
Ditto.
I gotta say it but the gay gladiator ( i think he is the gay one) with the blonde hair on NBC would make a good Thor.
Regardless of DiCaprio's acting chops and bankability, that baby face of his can not pull off Captain America.
He didn't look that “baby face” in Blood Diamond though.
