Looks Like Jason Was Right - “Wall-E” Will Be Awesome

I’m not much for bragging…unless I’m right, but I would like to say that I called this one a long time ago. I’ve been harping on Wall-E pretty much since the first time I saw footage of the film. I knew right away that this tale of a lonely cleaning robot discovering love for the first time would somehow spark something in audiences and that Pixar would be able to work their magic yet again and create one of their best films yet. I just had a feeling.

Well, Wall-E opens today and it looks like I was probably right.

I’m kidding, of course (sort of), but I have been really excited about Wall-E for a long time now and I’m very happy that early reviews of the film have been phenomenal. Everything I’ve seen so far has just been funny and perfect from a marketing point of view. As recently as last weekend a lot of analyst were still saying that Wall-E wouldn’t be able to do the kind of numbers that many of Pixar’s other films have done and probably wouldn’t even beat Kung Fu Panda for the top grossing animated movie of the year prize. After seeing the movie, however, tons of people are changing their minds.

Check out some of the articles that have been published just in the last couple of days:

In a matter of days we went from “this movie can’t even be the top grossing summer animated movie” to “this movie is our first Best Picture candidate.” High praise indeed.

Since Pop Critics is still an infant in the industry we did not get to screen the film early, however, I plan to see it this weekend and will follow my viewing with a review, of course. Poor Mike will be traveling this weekend and will be unable to see it.

So what do you guys think? Is this film on your “must see” list now? Was it before? Do you plan to see it this weekend? Will you go see Wanted instead? If you are seeing both which do you plan to watch first?

  1. Are you still seeing Wanted? I may go to see it tonight with my brother in San Diego.

  2. By the way, calling it Best Picture? WOW, that's high praise…now I NEED to see it.

  3. It has been on my “must see” list just because it's Pixar. It looks brilliant and I'm sure it will be hilarious. Not sure if I will get to it this weekend (working on Finals), but if I have the opportunity, I will catch it.

  4. Mike and I heard that there are stretches (namely towards the beginning) where there is no dialogue and that there are other things that might make it harder for kids to buy-in… but I'm hoping it is a big hit, because the animation and storyline is supposed to be amazing!

  5. Looks really good, cant wait to see it… !!

  6. Yeah, me and Ana are seeing it tonight.

  7. I love to see WALL-E get nominated for Best Picture. Actually I think it deserves a win.

Also, there was wonderful sound editing and mixing by Ben Burtt, he might even deserve a Special Achievement.

And there was a beautful score by Newman. Derserves nomintaion.

Most importantly, Stanton derserves a win for Best Original Screenplay. Beautiful storytelling, beautiful originality.

But what makes those voters discriminate animated movie?

    WALL-E FOR BEST PICTURE.

  8. I felt the same way until I saw The Dark Knight. Now I'm not so sure my vote would go to Wall-E. In fact, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't even though I think Wall-E deserves a nomination.

  9. wow, I just though this was going to be a cartoon about a dorky robot, best picture? will definitely have to check it out when if comes out on video, thanks for the heads up mate.
