Believe it or not, the rumors of a RoboCop remake are no longer just rumors. MGM announced in March that they were interested in bringing RoboCop back, but no one seemed to know anything about it. Then, out of nowhere, a banner appeared on the floor of the Licensing International Expo 2008 in New York City.
Since the March announcement MGM hasn’t released any official word on the film. However, an MGM exec at the Expo told one fan that the film would be rated R and would “blow everyone away.” He also said they’ve offered it to some great directors but wouldn’t name any names.
The rumor is that they hope to fire up this franchise the way the Terminator franchise is getting rebooted. I think it’s a noble goal, but I’m not sure if it’ll work. I remember watching the first RoboCop film in the theater when it came out. The scene where the gang beats up and then blows off the hand of the cop with a shotgun stayed with me for a pretty long time. I thought the movie was pretty cool back then. It doesn’t hold up well to repeat viewings though.
Will today’s audiences think that a robotic cop is anything special? What can they put in the film to make it interesting enough for today’s kids to want to go see it? I think they have an uphill battle.
The original still holds up pretty well. I smell a CGI-fest craptacular…
They'd have to make it an Iron Man-esque kind of film, I think.
I think its studios trying to reclaim old one hit wonders and do something different with it, if they keep the same formula and simply do the modern day “we are reenvisioning it” then its not going to work..
I haven't seen any of the RoboFlop movies…

Robocop 3 was EASILY the best one of all the series…. wow, I almost said that without a cringing sarchastic like you ate a whole pack of sweettarts at once face too….
