Comic book review: “Kick-Ass” (Issue One)
Sometimes it seems like a tough task reviewing a tiny, 24-page comic book. There is only so much there that you can even talk about without giving too much of the plot away.
But Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass was so much fun to read, I obviously had to write a review on it.
The opening three pages are fantastic and gave me the chuckles right away. The story revolves around Dave Lizewski, a superhero of sorts who doesn’t appear to be a very good one. At least, that’s how things start out as we get an immediate backstory on his origins.
Where did he come from? A bite by a spider? His parents killed? Radioactivity? No…his reasons essentially boil down to boredom and loneliness.
There is a great panel mocking the way most heroes are created, in which we see a fake Dave crying out, “I will avenge you mother!” I never laughed so hard at a comic book before.
One day young David just decides he wants to be a superhero and goes out to do it. Without giving too much away…that doesn’t exactly go so well. He has no powers or any abilities other than a kid with a crappy weapon.
The story was fun, I’m looking forward to the next two issues. I believe the fourth is out later this month.
I read the Director’s Cut edition of Issue One, and it had the original script attached in the back, some sketches done in designing what Dave would look like and a few alternate covers.
