Poster and preview for True Blood, new HBO vampire series

For some reason, I haven’t been paying much attention to the new HBO series True Blood, either because I didn’t know what it was all about, or somehow just missed hearing about it.

Either way, the premiere is coming on September 7th and I wanted to give you all a heads up on what might be a pretty interesting new take on the vampire mythology.

The premise sounds a bit odd, but it’s also unique enough to have promise. In the not-too-distant-future, vampires walk alongside humans, with both parties in relative safety due to mass-produced synthetic blood called TruBlood.

Just because that desire for human blood has been suppressed, vampires uncomfortably live among humans, not yet sure how the world looks upon them.

The series will focus on Sookie Stackhouse, played by Anna Paquin. She’s a barmaid in Louisianna who can read minds, and her world is turned upside down when Vampire Bill visits her place of employment a few years after the vampires come out of the “coffin.”

True Blood also stars Stephen Moyer, Rutina Wesley, Michael Raymond-James, Jim Parrack and many others. The creation of the show belongs to Alan Ball, who was also behind Six Feet Under and the film American Beauty.

In conjunction with the show, a special one-shot prelude comic book will be released at Comic-Con this week, and 16 pages will be available on HBO.com starting on the 24th.

The comic book will tell the tale of the Vampire King of California, Lamar, who goes to Tokyo to in order to meet with the company behind TruBlood. From there, he’ll learn their master plan and what role they have in store for him.

Comic Book Resource has the first few pages already up on their site, and it’s not bad so far. I plan on snagging it this week and try to have a review up as quickly as possible.

There is also a pretty strong viral marketing campaign going on, some of which is outlined over on Fan Grrl Magnet if you are interested in taking a look.

The entire story is based on the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris.

I like the idea of the story, and it just adds to the reasons why I’ll likely have to renew my HBO subscription in the coming weeks. I’m also a big fan of Paquin’s, so it’s nice to see her getting work.

What do you guys think? Something you’ll add to the DVR?
