Not too long ago we told you about Guy Ritchie’s plans to update Sherlock Holmes for today’s audiences over at Warner Brothers. At the time we didn’t have any firm casting news or anything, but Variety has just confirmed that Robert Downey, Jr. has signed on to the role of Sherlock Holmes himself.
Ritchie’s film is listed as a drama and is set to film in October so this role will be Downey’s first since becoming an action star with his role in Iron Man. Downey committed to the part after Ritchie turned in a polish of the latest version of the script, written by Anthony Peckham.
Meanwhile, a separate Sherlock Holmes film is being fast tracked by Columbia Pictures. Their film is a comedy that is set to star Sasha Baron Cohen as Sherlock Holmes and Will Ferrell as Dr. Watson. It doesn’t appear as if the two films will actually be competing as Warner Brothers is hoping to release Ritchie’s film by October of 2009, while Ferrell’s probably won’t hit theaters until 2010.
I have to say I was already really interested to see what Guy Ritchie would do with Sherlock Holmes, but with Robert Downey, Jr. attached I’m at least ten times more interested. This will probably be an A-list film now.
What do you guys think?
