The inside scoop on the Smashing Pumpkins’ song from the Watchmen trailer

I can’t get the song out of my head from the Watchmen trailer. I heard some people grumbling about how it didn’t have a lot of power to it, but I thought it had strength in its quiet, dark tones.

In case you missed it, the song is called The Beginning Is The End Is The Beginning from the Smashing Pumpkins: Rarities & B-Sides album. You can listen to it right now as you read the rest of this article by clicking the play button below:

There is another curious fact about it, that only the astute among our readers may have picked up on. I can definitely tell you that I don’t fall into that category either.

Especially when it comes to all things “trivia” about the horrible Batman & Robin.

From the MTV Movie Blog comes the heads up that this same song was contributed by the Smashing Pumpkins to the Batman & Robin soundtrack, except that it was called The End Is The Beginning Is The End.

So somehow, director Zack Snyder picked a song that has already been in another superhero movie, and a pretty crappy one at that.

MTV did an interview with him and we have the clip below where he talks about why he chose this song. He cites that the song has the same mood of Watchmen and what they are trying to do. It also would stir some raised eyebrows because the trailer itself sort makes you wonder what it’s about, and the song being “provocative” would help.

But he also stated the obvious reason: It will create a little controversy.

All filmmakers love a little controversy, especially if it raises awareness as to the existence of their movie.

Personally, I loved the choice. The trailer was mainly in slow motion, and the song feels that way too. The lyrics “in our darkest hour” completely relate to the line at the end of the trailer by Rorschach: “The world will look up and shout ‘Save us!’…and I’ll reply ‘No’…”

The short little interview with Snyder is below. Did you like the song choice for the trailer? Are you excited for the film in general?
