What to rent: New DVD releases for 7/15/08

A slow week in terms of movies to rent, but there is one giant title that you HAVE to see, and a few other goodies. And when I mean movies to rent, I’m talking about stuff that was just in theaters recently that you may not have gotten a chance to see.

Mike’s Recommendations

The Bank Job

A fantastic little bank heist film starring Jason Statham whom you know you love, plus a great supporting cast. This is based on a true story of a bank robbery in London from the 1970s which went totally unsolved for a very long time.

Definitely the best option out there for you this week. For more details, read my initial review.

Birds of Prey: The Complete Series

Okay, I honestly have never seen this series, nor do I think I really heard of it before Monday night. It SOUNDS vaguely familiar, but I know I never watched it. Birds of Prey is a 2002 series that was given no chance to survive and died an all-too familiar death.

The plot? Batman and Catwoman have a daughter named Helena, who calls herself The Huntress and fights crime. Based off a DC comic book of the same name, Birds of Prey starred Ashely Scott from Jericho and a couple of other fairly hot actresses.

From my brief perusing of the interweb, fans have been waiting for this series to come to DVD for awhile, and not only that, it’s in WIDESCREEN format!

Saving Grace: Season 1

Never saw it, nor do I want to, but I’ve heard nothing but good things about it. If you’ve wanted to check this out and missed the first season, now is the time!

What You’ll Probably Rent

This week’s edition of “what you’ll probably rent” is pretty weak actually. There is some hellacious crap out there.

College Road Trip

A comedy with Martin Lawrence and Donny Osmond. You know you’ll be hitting up Blockbuster right after reading this. By the way, it got a 2.8 on IMDB.

Meet Bill

I sooooo wanted this to be a funny movie, but I heard very much to the contrary. It stars Amanda Peet, Aaron Eckhart (Two-Face!), Jessica Alba and Timothy Olyphant and you simpletons who just want nonsense to laugh at will likely enjoy this.

Edit: Shutter

Creepy horror movies always do well at the video store, and this one starts Joshua Jackson from Dawson’s Creek, so what could be better?

Blu-Ray

Some cool new Blu-Ray releases:

The Best of the Worst

A new section of What to Rent brought solely to make you chuckle. A new release dug up from the bottom of the barrel.

The Beach Party at the Threshold of Hell

Note: This may actually be a fun movie, but the title is hilarious and it stars Daniel Baldwin.

Until next week!
