Last month we told you that William Peterson would be leaving CSI after this season and we let you in on CBS’ plans for the continuation of the show. At that time they had in mind three potential candidates for a role that would replace Peterson on the show, all big names including Laurence Fishburne, Kurt Russell, and John Malkovich. Well, we’re now reporting that Laurence Fishburne is the prime candidate.

The search for a new lead has been shrouded in secrecy but some news has been filtering out. We now know that Laurence Fishburne is the producers’ choice for the new character they are creating to replace the character, Gil Grissom, played by Peterson. The new character is described as a doctor/scientist outsider to the CSI unit who has the same genetic profile as a serial killer but hasn’t previously acted on any homicidal impulses.

Fishburne, of course, is a star of both stage and screen and is an Oscar nominated actor. It will be quite a coup indeed if they were able to land him. I still give the show only a 50/50 shot of making it past one season without Grissom, but at least no one would be able to say they didn’t give it a good shot.

What do you think? Would you be more likely to watch a Grissom-less CSI if Laurence Fishburne were to take a role?
