No Star Wars Opening Crawl In The Clone Wars
According to the MTV Movies Blog, the new Star Wars film, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, won’t feature at least one major Star Wars tradition - the opening crawl. That’s right, this time around the Lucas and Company have decided to not do the Star Wars opening crawl at the beginning of the film.
The distinctive Star Wars opening crawl prologue has begun every single Star Wars feature so far, but director Dave Filoni said, “Because we originally developed this as a TV series, George [Lucas] felt that the crawl wasn’t going to be effective as a way to introduce the audience to the TV series. He wanted it to be faster and he wanted to do it visually.”
In place of the crawl will be a Starship Troopers like newsreel complete with 1940s style radio announcer.
“We kind of borrowed from old serials that would have like the little circular wipes and show you what Flash Gordon was up to the last time you were at the theater and we did it in a more traditional sense,” Filoni said of the change. “The narration also is kind of a nod to old newsreel footage that you could see during a war, where they would update you on where the allies were at and their battle against the axis.”
But more than anything, Filoni said, it was a chance to clue an audience into thinking that this wasn’t your father’s “Star Wars”…even though it kind of is.
I’ve thought about it and I don’t think I have a problem with them changing it up. It’s nice to hang with tradition and all, but The Clone Wars is so completely different from the other films that there’s really no reason why it should follow that tradition. The newsreel is probably a much better way to convey a lot of information in a short time to a younger audience especially. It should work really well for the animated Star Wars feature(s).
What do you think? Will you miss the crawl? Do you think they should have kept it?
