What to rent: New DVD releases for 8/19/08

Another week of DVD picks, but this time there are some awesome titles, including excellent TV selections, good movies and even a pick that sports fans shouldn’t miss.

As always, I will give you the stuff serious DVD watchers should rent, followed up by the titles that will provide mindless entertainment all weekend long.

Dexter: Season 2

OMG! I may have to hijack the final two discs of Dexter: Season 2 from my local Blockbuster chain as early as this afternoon. I’m stuck on episode 20 because On Demand has left me wanting for the last four episodes of this tense, thrill-ride of a second season.

If you haven’t watched Dexter yet, it’s one of the best shows out there. Check it out, but wait until the kids go to bed.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Season 1

Now is the time to catch up on the short, nine-episode season of the hit show about John Connor and his hot Terminator girlfriend. Okay, they aren’t dating…yet. In fact, she may want to kill him in season two from what I hear.

If you missed the marathon that started last weekend for the first season, then rent this and join the fight against Skynet!

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day

This movie didn’t get much press, but it did earn a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes and stars Lee Pace, Amy Adams and Frances McDormand. That’s an impressive cast and this is the plot:

“Guinevere Pettigrew, a middle-aged London governess, finds herself unfairly dismissed from her job. An attempt to gain new employment catapults her into the glamorous world and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer, Delysia Lafosse.”

Wimbeldon: The 2008 Finals: Nadal versus Federer (Widescreen)

If you love sports and enjoy tennis, this was the match of a lifetime, one that John McEnroe called the best ever. Get it in widescreen and see the entire match.

Gossip Girl: The Complete First Season

Here’s another series that you can catch up on before it begins season two on September 1st. Lots of pretty people and high school mischief, all on the rich side of Manhattan.

Recount

The tale of hanging CHADS and the 2000 Presidential Election that put Florida on the map for more than just oranges and retirement.

Kevin Spacey, Dennis Leary, Tom Wilkinson, William Hurt and Laura Dern lead a pretty awesome ensemble cast in this critically acclaimed HBO movie.

What You’ll Probably Rent

Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior

Yes, more of The Rock and the awesome Scorpion King! Oh wait, he’s not in this, it’s some other UFC guy named Randy Couture. Figured you should know before you rent it!

Street Kings

A 36% on Rotten Tomatoes wont stop you from wanting to see Keanu Reeves let loose a couple of “woahs” in this crime drama.

Camp Rock (Extended Rock Star Edition)

If anyone one of you rents this and tells me about it, I’ll probably ban your IP address from this site. I’ve never even heard the Jonas Brothers sing and this DVD release wont change that.
