What to Rent: New DVD Releases for 8/26/08

This week is packed with TV shows and some interesting Blu-Ray releases, along with a a movie that wont be on my rent list, but could make yours.

There are 23 total titles new to Blu-Ray this week, but only about half of them are worth a gander.

The only downside to all these television DVDs this week is that you barely have enough time to catch up before the next season begins. I really wish these TV studios would try to get these things out months in advance, so people have plenty of time to get in every episode before the fall.

The Nightmare Before Christmas: Special 2-Disc Edition and Blu-Ray Edition

It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen this movie and I honestly don’t remember much about it other than it was creepy and cool. Tim Burton always excels at setting a scary mood and Nightmare Before Christmas was one of his best.

Now it’s out with a new 2-disc special edition and a marvelous Blu-Ray version. Can’t imagine how great this must look in 1080p.

Entourage: The Complete Fourth Season

Perhaps a sub-par year for the HBO series, but still something all you Vincent Chase fans out there should check out. If you are behind or want to catch up before the fifth season launches on September 28th, now is the time.

One Tree Hill: The Complete Fifth Season

This year of the hit CW show was remarkable for one giant reason: It pulled off an amazing stunt by jumping the series four years into the future.

That was a stunner and something that actually worked. The producers and writers decided the stories they could tell after college were a lot more interesting, so they just skipped those four years.

Heroes: Season 1 (Blu-Ray)

This was one of the best first seasons of a show I’ve seen, even if the finale was sort of a let-down. But it was much better the second season (which is also out this week) and seeing it in Blu-Ray has to be special.

Pale Rider (Blu-Ray)

One of my dad’s favorite Clint Eastwood movies, I’m not even sure I’ve seen it, but I know it’s one of those classic westerns that we just don’t see much of these days.

Check out the rest of this week’s releases over at Amazon.com.

What You’ll Probably Rent

What Happens In Vegas

Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher in what people described as a pretty bad romantic comedy. 27% on Rotten Tomatoes if that means anything to you.

I doubt it does.

  1. I think the Blue Ray of the Nightmare is a definate purchase, its the 1st movie the wife and I saw, and my son loves it and even the music. Buy now as Disney will lock it int their vault again.(i think disney owns, the right, regardless couldn't find on DVD once my VCR broke).
