Poster and Trailer for the Controversial Hounddog Starring Dakota Fanning

If you’ve heard anything about Hounddog it’s probably because it stirred up a bit of controversy when it hit the festival circuit and people realized that Dakota Fanning was appearing in a rape scene. Not a lot has been said about the movie other than what’s been said, good and bad, about that scene, but the studio is gearing up for a limited release.

If you’re of the curious kind or want to know how weird you should feel about yourself for wanting to see this film you can always read the actual script pages that contain the rape scene. It doesn’t read as bad as it sounds when you just say it although I have no idea what it looks like on film. Early reviews say that the movie isn’t that great but Dakota’s performance is akin to Jodie Foster’s early work.

A provocative Southern tale set in rural Alabama in the late 1950s, HOUNDDOG is the story of a spirited young girl LEWELLEN (Dakota Fanning) and her struggle to rise above the repression that surrounds her.

Lewellen lives with her stern religious zealot grandmother, GRAMMIE (Piper Laurie), but spends most of her time down the hill with her much-adored DADDY (David Morse) in his falling down shack. Daddy is wild and rough and frequently brings home a beautiful but troubled woman (Robin Wright Penn) who has a mysterious history with him and comes and goes when his drink and abuse becomes too much for her. But while she’s around, Lewellen’s longing heart reaches for her love.

Lewellen is deeply talented and finds comfort and safety, as well as a place to put her hurt and rage, in the music of Elvis Presley. When Elvis Presley comes to town for a concert, Lewellen is desperate to go but has no money for a ticket. Her best friend, Buddy, trying to get her a ticket, arranges for her to do her Elvis impersonation for a local teenager in exchange for tickets to the concert. During the impersonation, the teenager attacks Lewellen and steals her innocence.

The attack leaves Lewellen feeling alone and hopeless. It is only the caretaker CHARLES (Afemo Omilami) who can see the spirit in Lewellen and save her soul. He teaches her to use The Blues, to turn her tragedy into a gift. Lewellen ultimately finds her true voice, giving her the strength and courage to walk away from her past and into her future.

Hounddog is set to open in limited release on September 19, 2008.

  2. I would love to see a great performance by Fanning, but I don't think I can make myself so see a movie where a little girl is raped on screen.

  4. A LITTLE GIRL WAS RAPED IN A TIME TO KILL BUT THERE WAS NO MAJOR UUPROAR ABOUT THAT AND THAT WAS A MOVIE BASED ON ACTUAL FACTS. THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS ITS SOMETHING THAT UNFOURTUNANTLY MANY KIDS HAVE BEEN THROUGH. AS ADULTS PEOPLE SHOULD STOP ACTING AS IF THIS IS IS SOMETHING UNHEARD OF.

  5. WHY ARE YOU YELLING?

  6. Rape in any form isn't a strong drawing point, esp if its a child. If a rape is in a movie because it happened in real life, and is part of the story it is more palatable, even though it is more troubling morally because it really did occur, rather than a rape scene or a movie that you know the world could really do without. There is enough to horrify you by reading/watching the news. I really thought the race card was going to be played.

  7. Don't yell at me!

And I've never seen A Time to Kill.
