Stallone Coming Back For Rambo 5

We all knew after the fourth film, Rambo, made a bit of a splash that a fifth film was always a possibility. Sylvester Stallone and others have said that it wouldn’t happen, but money talks. Now we’re getting news that a fifth film in the series has a green light.

Several articles have appeared over the last few days that show Lionsgate having a Rambo 5 listed as one of their productions in development to be written and directed by Sylvester Stallone. So far this has not been confirmed by the studio, but it’s just a matter of time. This is a done deal.

Rambo, the film that hit theaters last year, grossed $42.5M stateside and $113M worldwide. I have no idea what it’s done on DVD sales, but from what I can gather it’s done brisk business so far. As long as Stallone is willing to do another one (or more!) there’s no reason to expect them to not make another one.

I finally saw Rambo on DVD not too long ago and I have to admit that it was much better than I had anticipated (although even more gratuitously violent if that’s possible). It was pretty much everything I expected it to be. What ruined it for me when the film came out in theaters was the incredibly awful previews. I think the studio really hurt themselves with the trailers for the film. If they had advertised the movie that I saw the way it should have been they would have grossed twice what they did in the US.

I think another sequel would probably do even better. Almost everyone that I’ve talked to that’s seen Rambo (mostly on DVD) has said that it was better than they thought it would be. I can’t help but think that word of mouth and anticipation for a fifth film would be even better than it was for the last one.

What do you think? Did you see Rambo? Would you go see a fifth film in the series?
