Jason has been dutifully keeping us updated on the money that The Dark Knight has been raking in, as many of us wanted to see it pass Titanic in the all-time gross list. It’s not going to happen, but I’ve been mentioning in comments recently that Warner Brothers will likely re-release it early next year to pull in additional dollars and hopefully create Oscar buzz.
It just makes sense that they would.
Now the Hollywood Reporter and Rueters are reporting that the studio is doing just that. They want to keep their film fresh in the minds of Oscar voters and thus they’ll be returning the movie to theaters sometime in January.
However, at this point, it looks like they are talking to IMAX venues only, but doesn’t necessarily mean it wont be out in normal theaters as well.
I’m really excited about this news, mostly because after seeing it just once, I was positive this film could win at least one Academy Award, if not two. Of course Heath Ledger is a no-brainer for a nomination. If he’s not up for Supporting Actor come the nomination announcements, it will astound me.
But there is also a chance the movie itself could be up for Best Picture (not to mention a bunch of other smaller categories, like special effects, etc), and I can’t imagine a more exciting Academy Awards to watch where Batman and The Joker could both take home those shiny trophies.
What do you guys think? Are you pulling for The Dark Knight come Oscar season?

Given we haven't really gotten in to “Oscar season” yet and thus it doesn't have a lot of real competition quite yet, I would say I would like to see a bigger film do some damage on awards night.
Its what would make me watch the oscars….
What drives me batty (ha, like that reference?) is IT IS Oscar season…. it measures movies from Jan-Dec 2008…. but thery only choose dumb dramas released in Nov & december…. stoopid old academy of dolts…
Aye, aye Cap'n!
No kidding…but the other thing is, studios know this and release their best stuff during Nov-Dec, so it's kind of their fault too in a way.
I'm with Robert Downey Jr. on this one… Dark Knight didn't do it for me. Yeah, yeah, I know that Batman is supposed to be about angst, and a psychological journey but that still doesn't explain away the plot holes and the inconsistencies. The selfless sacrifices of the people of Gotham at the end and yet moments before they would lynch an accountant or give up Batman for the Joker? Sorry, it got unbelievable at the end due to their past deeds.
But, although I was skeptical of Ledger's performance being worthy of an Oscar nomination, I am happy to say he DID live up to the hype.
