What To Rent: New DVD releases for 9/2/08

I almost missed doing my weekly DVD picks because of the beautiful holiday we just had throwing me off a day. But here they are and it’s actually a great week for television, which appears to be the norm as of late. Am I the only one noticing the trend lately of better stuff coming out for television than movies?

More than likely it’s just the time of the year, as last season’s stuff arrives just in time for you to frantically catch up with your favorite shows.

The Office: Season Four

A no-brainer here. Perhaps not as good as season two or three, but we finally get to see Jim and Pam together, not to mention an incredibly awkward dinner party with Michael and Jan.

There is also a new collection edition of all four seasons called The Office Ultimate Package (”That’s what she said”).

I’d buy it just for the title, even if it’s $104 on Amazon.

Transformers (Two-Disc Special Edition) Blu-Ray

We had hoped to get an advanced copy of this to review for you guys, but it never materialized. Either way, this is going to be the first thing I rent for my new Playstation 3 when it arrives sometime this week.

Loved the movie when I first saw it in theaters. Not the greatest movie ever, but still a fun ride and very cool to see those Transformers jump from the cartoon state onto the big screen with some seriously awesome special effects.

Life: Season One

Loved this brand new 2007 series on NBC, then I watched Band of Brothers and really got to see how Damian Lewis got started, which made me appreciate Life even more.

There is no question that Lewis makes the series what it is, and that’s okay. There are some decent supporting cast members, but his antics and style is just unmatched on TV these days. Lewis as an actor has an appeal that is hard to ignore.

I totally recommend catching up on the first season.

Supernatural: The Complete Third Season

I stopped watching this season midway through season two, but only because there was some major DVR conflicts going on Thursday nights in our house. But the show was fun and I’m truly bummed that I’m so far behind these days.

This would have been a good show to catch up on this past summer. I’ve heard nothing but awesome things about season three.

Cheers: The Tenth Season

The second to the last season of this long-running NBC comedy series. I don’t remember much about the tenth season of Cheers, but it sure would be a trip down memory lane to watch a few episodes.

Married Life

This is a borderline recommendation from me, mainly because the reviews were just so-so. It has a 58% on Rotten Tomatoes, but the cast of Chris Cooper, Pierce Brosnan, Rachel McAdams and Patricia Clarkson is interesting. It’s set in 1949 and is a melodramatic story of the trials and tribulations of marriage.

It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown!

Wow, I guess this is the first time it’s out on DVD, and just in time for Halloween in a month and a half. What a great comic strip Peanuts was and I always loved the cartoon movies.

  1. A week should not go by without a “That's what she said” reference! Thanks for starting us off right, Mike.

  2. Wow, I totally forgot about “Life.”

  3. Actually - the Peanuts “It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” came out in an 3-pack DVD Peanut's Holiday set in 2000. I know, I own it. It has that one along with “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” and “A Charlie Brown Christmas.”

Great classic holiday Peanut cartoons. :)

  4. Well suck it…I was reading on Amazon and all these reviews from back in
2000 and such were talking about “videos” and “you have to buy this video”,
so I figured it hadn't been a DVD yet.

    Ah well…
