Will Smith Hires Randall Wallace to Have a Go at The Last Pharaoh

Way back in March we were one of the first to tell you about Will Smith getting involved with a script called The Last Pharaoh. Smith had Chris Hauty (Never Back Down) polishing a script by Carl Franklin (Devil In A Blue Dress) at the time, but I guess he wasn’t perfectly happy with it because he’s hired someone else to take a shot.

That someone else is none other than Randall Wallace (Braveheart). I’m guessing that Smith is looking to make this film more epic since that’s what Wallace is known for (he also wrote Pearl Harbor, The Man in the Iron Mask, and We Were Soldiers). Still, I think it’s going to be more of a director’s movie than anything else if he wants to make this work. Find the right director and this could be a pretty cool flick - find the wrong one and this could be another Alexander.

In case you’re wondering, the film reportedly centers on Taharqa, the last Pharaoh of the 25th or Nubian Dynasty (the one in which blacks of Ethiopian descent ran Egypt) and is supposedly full of Ethiopians battling Assyrians for the throne of Amun-Ra. Taharqa was the son of Piye, the Nubian king of Napata who had first conquered Egypt, and the younger brother and successor of Shebitku.

And no, Taharqa wasn’t actually THE last Pharaoh of Egypt. That distinction belongs to Cleopatra VII. I’m not sure why this is called The Last Pharaoh.

  15. I second Maria, Taharqa is a Nubian King of Napata and was not an Ethiopian. I hope the movie, which I am excited about, will shed some light on the great Nubian civilization.
