American Idol Season 7 is in the homestretch and is winding down. It won’t be long before the winner is announced and the whole thing is in the record books. It seems like the season has gone by pretty quickly. Heck, it seems like only yesterday we were watching the showdown between Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis in the finale for Season 6.
If you were a fan of either of those contestants then I’d recommend picking up a copy of the American Idol: Season 6 Final Performance Show - The Top 2 DVD that’s hitting stores today. I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of it from Koch Vision. Of course, I saw the show live last season, but watching it again I was somewhat surprised by how well the performances held up.
The DVD is actually two discs. The first disc in the set is the actual live finale. During the finale, the two singers took turns trying to win over the audience. Sparks performed Christina Aguilera’s “Fighter” and Martina McBride’s “A Broken Wing,” while Blake performed his popular interpretation of Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love A Bad Name” and Maroon 5’s “She Will Be Loved.” Both contestants then individually performed “This Is My Now,” the winning song from the 2007 American Idol songwriting contest. Disc 1 also features the live performance of “Home” by returning Idol contestant Chris Daughtry and his band.
Without commercials the live finale seemed to flow much better than it did when watching it on television. There’s not that much fluff in the show as most of it is the contestants actually performing. It’s filmed with a lot of close-ups as well which makes it all seem pretty intimate. The actual results were revealed on a different night, of course, but the DVD, thankfully, skips the fluff of that show and just shows us the actual results being announced. It was a good way to do it.
The second disc in the set is considered a bonus disc and gives a behind-the-scenes look at the show. Included are two featurettes on the contestants. One is called Just Jordin and features an intimate look at the journey of American Idol’s youngest winner ever while the other is called Being Blake which takes a backstage look at the beat-boxing runner-up.
Also included in the Bonus Disc is a “How to Audition for American Idol Guide” which you might find useful if you ever decide you want to try to become the next American Idol. There’s also a never-before-seen-blooper reel that’s pretty funny.
If you’re an American Idol fan or especially if you’re a fan of either Jordin Sparks or Blake Lewis then I recommend picking up this DVD for your collection. Amazon.com has it right now for only $12.99 which is $7 off the list price.
