American Idol 2008 Crowns A Winner For Season 7!

No better than my record was for predicting who would get voted off every week, I suppose it was inevitable that I would get the ultimate predication about who wins American Idol wrong as well. In my recap of the Top 2 finale I disagreed with the judges enthusiasm for David Archuleta, but I was forced to agree that little David probably did enough to win the ultimate prize. Little did we know…

David Cook Wins American Idol 2008!

Season 7 is now behind us and David Cook has been named this years American Idol in a surprising turn of events. Perhaps it was Archuleta’s lack of personality all season long, or Cook’s overall charisma, or maybe even a backlash against the judges who seemed to want Archie to win over all others, but whatever it was, it worked in David Cook’s favor Tuesday night as 97.5 million votes were cast and 54.6 million of them were for Cook. It was a record number of votes cast for the program and David Cook beat David Archuleta by an astounding 12 million votes.

Even those of us who didn’t agree with the judges during the finale never saw this coming. With all of the attention being placed on David Archuleta, many of us assumed his lead was pretty solid. Perhaps we should have checked out the Vegas odds a little closer. As it turns out, the oddsmakers never took their money off of David Cook and had him for the win the whole time. Did they know something we didn’t know? Most likely.

Before the votes were read during the results show Simon Cowell was reduced to a rare moment of personal accountability. He actually apologized to David Cook for his comments to him during the live performance show and admitted that winner of the night “wasn’t quite so clear cut as we called it.”

So another season ends on a fairly positive note. Although ratings were down around 8 percent overall this year (much less than most other shows), Tuesday’s show was actually up around 3 percent over last year and they received 23.5 million more votes this year during the finale.

Looks like they’ll be doing it again after all!

  1. We must have been on some kind of blackout or something. AFN said they’d carry it live, and then at the regular time (we’re off by a few hours) but it hasn’t been on… :(

That’s all I have to say, just got back from Indiana Jones and now it’s time for bed :)

  3. Woot - I was shocked and ecstatic all at the same time that Cook won! Not sure if it was the best thing for him, but still pretty happy that he holds the crown.

  5. I really think he was the strongest contestant overall. Could be a nice turning point in AI history… into a more artist-centric expectation and different marketing potential down the road… or it could just be an anomaly that means nothing. We’ll see.

Either way, David Cook is a classy guy!
