Bryan Singer confirms ‘Superman’ sequel

Superman Returns

Well, Bryan Singer confirmed the long suspected and pretty much believed rumors that a sequel to Superman Returns will happen.

And from the sounds of things, it could be one of the rare occasions where a sequel outdoes the original. From the story on Empire:

“The first one was a romantic film and a nostalgic film,â€Â? he says. “I’ll be the first person to own up to that without making any apologies for it. I knew it was going to be that from the outset. And now that the characters are established, there’s really an opportunity to up the threat levels…Clearly there’ll be a body count [laughs]. From frame one, it will be unrelenting terror! All those teenage girls who found the movie and mooned over James Marsden or Brandon? Well, I’m going to wake them up!â€Â? He may be joking about the unrelenting terror.

That’s pretty much how I felt about it. I wanted to like it, but I left the theater feeling lukewarm, probably for the reasons above: a romantic and nostalgic Superman wasn’t exactly what I was looking for.

There are also rumors, unconfirmed as of yet, that the writing team from Transformers, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman will replace Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty in developing the new script.

He also added this, on the subject of it being a flop:

“That movie made $400 million!” Singer says incredulously. “I don’t know what constitutes under-performing these days…Look, I can understand, I suppose, what some people mean. Perhaps some people went in with the expectation of it being like an X-Men film, and Superman is a tougher character than that. Especially bringing him back. It really goes back to the fact that you can only please some of the people some of the time. But, yes, I’m just getting back with writers after the strike. We’re just in the development phase. I’m starting to develop a sequel…with the intention of directing it.”

I for one love the Superman franchise, the character, everything about it, so I’m really pulling for this sequel to be a success.

Let’s just hope it’s not called Superman Salvation: The Rise of the Luthor, or Superman: The Return Return of Superman. Sorry, I’m now paranoid about movie titles.

Insert the Capn doing a little jig here WOO HOO!!! =D

Singer was formerly in the running for dumbest man in Hollywood. I’m pleased to announce he’s won the award!!!

“Perhaps some people went in with the expectation of it being like an X-Men film, and Superman is a tougher character than that.”

Really? Tougher how?

Tougher because you should have a larger pre-built audience? E.g. my mother knows who Superman is. My mother likes Superman. My mother thinks he’s the bee’s knees. My mother doesn’t know from these “X-Men”.

Tougher because he’s emotionally conflicted? He’s a damn boyscout! He fights for Truth, Justice, and the American Way. He doesn’t mope, pout, or whine about how tough life is as an alien.

Tougher because you have to explain his motivations to people? See: T/J&AW comment immediately above.

He’s only “tougher” if you cast a 23-year-old as a Pulitzer Prize winning mother of a seven-year-old super-kid with asthma. He’s only “tougher” if you feel compelled to rip off designs and themes from a 26-year-old movie (a movie, btw, older than your Lois Lane) instead of maybe, *maybe* trying to do something fresher. He’s only tougher if you cast a cardboard cutout in the central role. He’s only tougher if you can’t write or direct your way out of a wet paper bag.

Sorry. I am NOT looking forward to his sequel. You want to see what Superman Returns could have and should have been? Read Kevin Smith’s script for Superman Lives which lovingly tells the story of the Death of Superman. It’s funny, touching, heroic, and Super. Here’s the link (sorry for always linking, guys): http://www.script-o-rama.com/movie_scripts/superman-lives-script.html

R.A. Porter’s last blog post..How they got here: Winnie’s Cameltoe?

That’s a lot to read Porter, both the comment and Kevin’s script :)

I’ll have to check it out sometime, but you make some valid points that I can’t really argue with. Making an excuse like he did is sort of a wussie way out of things.

Sorry about my lengthy comment. I didn’t even realize how long I’d gone on!

As for the script, I totally recommend it. It’s a blast of a read, written by an actual fan of comic books and Superman. One who can write well, which doesn’t hurt a bit.

I thought SR was pretty bad. Didn’t come close to the expectations. It had essentially the same plot as the original movie, except this time Lois had an annoying kid, and a significant other who couldn’t act his way out of a paper bag. There’s a reason why Cyclops didn’t have more than 5 lines in the entire X-Men trilogy.

Will this be better? I’m not sure you can get much worse, so yeah, there’s a good chance it will be better, but Singer is definitely becoming the new Brett Ratner. And that’s not a good thing.

I’m not sure I’m ready to put Bryan Singer in the same boat as Brett Ratner just yet. That’s harsh.

The movie sucked plan and simply most geeks are still men who crave action. And as a fan of superman I think the movie, acting and directing sucked. The movie was lame and needs to either get a reboot or use the smallville cast and crew to make the next superman movie.

I’m not a hulk fan, but I will go see the hulk to help reboot the superman. Plz, support hulk to boot BS and BR off the next superman movie.

Im confused how seeing the Hulk removes Bryan Singer and Brandon Routh from a Superman sequel?
