Create Your Hero
This is another reason why Heroes is bothersome this season. Granted it’s getting a lot better, but the things they try to do on the side just irks me.
Right now, you can go to NBC.com and join in on the wildness that is “Create Your Hero” and help develop a new character that will appear on the show. Each week you vote on attributes and they will compile them all into one new superhero!
I honestly suspect this contest will soon be followed by a newer edition called “Create Some Scripts” for the new character, since there is no one doing any writing at the moment.
Lost is to blame for these side, internet-based projects or missions that happen to the all the new shows out there. Heroes went nuts with supposed “webisodes” that never happened, and now this contest to pick a new hero.
I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt that they are just trying to interact with the fans. But I am kind of sick of all that. A TV show shouldn’t be a lot of extra work…it’s there to be on my DVR until I want to watch it.
Like the Lost: Missing Pieces “mobisodes” out right now. Cool I guess, but you should never make episodes like this matter to the main TV show. Lost had so much going on after season two (I believe) with all the internet scavenger hunts that fans ate up like candy. It was cool, but that stuff should never take the place of the actual show. Don’t make your viewers have to work that much harder for more plot that’s relevant. Someone shouldn’t feel like they missed out on any vital information just because they didn’t get online and “follow the clues.”
And now this create-your-new-hero contest. There are two reasons I don’t like it…the first being what I said above.
The second one is that I would rather the writers pick heroes that fit into the plot and flow of the show, instead of the fanbase inserting some random character into the plot.
I want to feel like the writers have a direction for the show, a bigger purpose or reason, and just tossing in some fan-created hero seems to go against that.
Can you imagine the X-Files or even Lost inserting a random character that fans created? It would just make no sense.
Maybe I need to realize that is the world we live in today. This kind of interaction is becoming such a part of our everyday entertainment lives that this is just the tip of the iceberg.
What do you guys think? Is this create your hero cool or overkill?

That’s probably the biggest issue I have. I’m all for experimenting with new ways to have the audience engaged in a show outside of the traditional program. But when you have a show like Heroes that has this overarching storyline, you want to feel like they already have their concept nailed down. Then again, maybe they’re banking on the fact that whatever user-generated character could easily compliment whatever important plans they have for the show. Heck, even Lost acknowledges that even though they have their whole mythology settled, the details in the storyline can evolve because they may not affect the larger vision.
On a random side note, the thing I’m most curious to see with this writer’s strike is that amateurs and other media companies can take this opportunity to grow a new audience in online media. Unless the strike ends soon, the big TV broadcast guys won’t have anything interesting. Bringing back near-cancelled show leftovers won’t be exciting. And any online webisodes or games they try to do based on their current programming will stink. I love Lost because of the show Lost, not because of ‘extras’ it could hav online. But IF there is quality online media to be found, this is the time to be found.
