Get ready for it people. With the success of The Dark Knight in the IMAX format, more and more movies will be released on the giant, 70mm screen.
Next up is Eagle Eye starring Shia Lebeouf and Michelle Monaghan. From our friends over at First Showing we find out that the spy thriller is being UPCONVERTED from 35mm to 70mm just so they can show it on IMAX.
I have to agree with Alex, who tipped me off about this story. Despite never having seen one of these upconverts, I know exactly how images and pictures look on the internet when you try to blow them up to bigger sizes: Ugly and distorted.
Now, I have no clue if it will look that bad, but it definitely wasn’t filmed in 70mm and that’s what makes the IMAX experience so awesome. All you are getting is a movie shown on a bigger screen that wont offer any additional clarity or beauty.
I’m all for IMAX becoming the wave of the future, because those 20-30 minutes of IMAX-filmed footage on The Dark Knight were absolutely amazing. But hopefully this doesn’t just become a thing studios do without putting the effort into shooting it 70mm.
On a side note, you can watch an extended clip from Eagle Eye right over here!

Sorry… Im not going to be in a car accident and hurt my wrist to see this at 3:15 a.m. in the morning…
I understand why studios now want to do everything in IMAX since The Dark Knight did so well, but as a movie watcher, I don't think I'll pay the price to see just any movie in IMAX. Something like Lord Of The Ring, or The Chronicles of Narnia, yes. But not just any movie.
Yeah, who an afford it. Now maybe if they'd drop us a few screening passes so we could review the movies…
I'd be up for that.
