Variety reports that Jennifer Connelly has signed on and Kathy Bates is negotiating to star in The Day the Earth Stood Still for 20th Century Fox.
They will be joining Keanu Reeves in the remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic. Reeves will be playing Klaatu, a humanoid alien who lands on Earth in a spaceship with Gort, his robot sidekick (well, really his indestructible, heavily armed robot), to warn us Earthlings to change our evil ways or we will be destroyed by aliens who are watching us from afar.
The production is looking at a December start date. The film is planned as a tentpole picture for the studio. It is being written by David Scarpa (The Last Castle) and is set to be directed by Scott Derrickson (The Exorcism of Emily Rose).
