I meant to report this one last week, but missed out on it for some reason. At any rate, Ewan McGregor joined the cast of Angels & Demons, the prequel to the very successful but critically underwhelming The Da Vinci Code which starred Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon.
Angels & Demons finds Langdon entangled with powerful forces that have ancient roots: the Illuminati - the most powerful underground organization in history - as well as the Catholic Church. McGregor will play Camerlengo Carlo Ventresca, the late pope’s closest aide who helps symbologist professor Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) in the investigation of a murder and a plot to blow up the Vatican during a papal conclave.
Ayelet Zurer was also recently cast as the female lead in the film. She will play Vittoria Vetra, an Italian scientist who joins forces with Langdon.
Shooting is set to begin in Europe in June before heading to Los Angeles. The film is based, once again, on the book by Dan Brown. It is being directed by Ron Howard from a script by Akiva Goldsman.
I think this is probably a good move for McGregor even though I’m not exactly holding my breath in anticipation for this film. Ewan McGregor is a great actor who hasn’t had a great film role in so long we’re starting to forget he’s a star (is he still a star?). The last really good movie I remember him being in was Big Fish and that was way back in 2003. Everything else he’s done, that I’ve seen, including Star Wars: Episode III and The Island has been a big disappointment as far as his acting is concerned.

I liked Angels and Demons much better than Da Vinci Code and not just because of all the biblical controversy. It’s a better story and hopefully will make a good movie.

I’ll go see it now.
I read “Angels and Demons” before I read “Da Vinci Code” and I really enoyed it. After reading both books I then rented the movie. It just didn’t translate from book to movie as well as eveyone hoped it would. I think “A&D” as a movie will be at least %50 better then it’s predecessor, just because of the superior plot and action. I also like the idea of Ewan being cast. Excellent choice for this character in my option. I am actually hopefull that this movie will turn out good. Exciting.

I’m a huge fan of the book and I have been looking forward to this movie more than any other movie in…let’s say two years. But, how much a fan I ever am of Ewan Mcgregor (absolutely love him), I had hoped for a pure Italian actor to play the part of the Camerlengo.
I do have faith in Mcgregor (I mean, there’s a reason why he was cast), but he’s just not THE ONE Camerlengo for me. The character is so powerful and enigmatic that I have a hard time picturing beautiful singing and Star Wars-known Mcgregor in the part. However, I AM excited to see the movie. Can’t wait another year!
