Tropic Thunder Stays On Top Of Labor Day Weekend

Tropic Thunder Stays On Top Of Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day weekend is the traditional close of the summer movie season and this Labor Day saw no shortage of new films being dumped into the marketplace for a last ditch effort at making a few summer dollars. Most of the new films met with failure, however, enabling Robert Downey, Jr., who opened the summer at number one with Iron Man, close out the summer at number one with Tropic Thunder.

Robert Downey, Jr. Trashes The Dark Knight

Maybe Robert Downey, Jr. is saying it because he’s out promoting Tropic Thunder which opens today. Or maybe he said it because he’s bitter that his summer superhero flick, Iron Man, was the toast of the town until The Dark Knight arrived. Or maybe Robert Downey, Jr. was just being completely honest. Either way, he just totally dumped all over The Dark Knight and the people who made it.

Will The Dark Knight Break Opening Weekend Box Office Records?

A year ago I don’t think anyone would have thought that we’d be having this discussion. Batman Begins did really well at the box office, but no one was expected The Dark Knight to be in serious contention for box office champion of the summer of 2008. Not really.

Hellboy Overtakes Hancock At Box Office - No One Wants To Meet Dave

This weekend audiences weren’t content to just rest on their laurels while they waited for The Dark Knight to come out on July 18th. Instead, they substituted a pair of other comic book characters for the Caped Crusader and provided hefty box office for both Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Hancock.

Jon Favreau will direct “Iron Man 2″

It’s not really official yet, but Nikki Finke is reporting on her blog that a deal has been reached between Jon Favreau and Marvel Studios to make him the director of Iron Man 2.

Responsible for the massive success of Iron Man this summer, Favreau took his battle to the internet when he didn’t immediately get an offer from Marvel to stay on for the sequel.

Big Willie Rules Weekend & Sets Personal Records Even As “Hancock” Underperforms

Will “Big Willie” Smith made this holiday weekend the fifth Independence Day weekend that he’s ruled the box office cementing his place as the King of the Fourth Of July. However, even as Hancock doubled the gross of the second place film, it still managed to fall below industry expectations.

Movie review: “The Incredible Hulk” (2008)

Obviously the comparisons are going to be made with Iron Man, since they both came out in the same summer and both are Marvel productions. Hulk isn’t up to the level Iron Man was, but it definitely made up for the suckfest that was the original with Eric Bana.

DC Comics’ “Red” Getting Big Screen Adaptation

DC Comics has been taking a big back seat to Marvel in the recent past. Marvel has really hit a home run this summer with Iron Man and is poised to strike another blow with a rejuvenated Hulk franchise when The Incredible Hulk hits theaters tomorrow. DC isn’t sitting on their hands, though. They’ve just allowed Summit Entertainment to pick up the movie rights to WildStorm/DC Comics’ Red, which revolves around a former CIA agent.

Jon Favreau not signed yet to direct Iron Man 2

It sure didn’t take long for the success of Iron Man to wear off and the dark side of Hollywood to rear its ugly head. Which is just so sad to me because of the amount of money this film made. You’d think these people would be dancing in the streets tossing Benjamins over their heads.

That’s not the case apparently. The first half of this story starts with Jon Favreau.

Iron Man (Tony Stark) Cameo In “The Incredible Hulk” Revealed In New Trailer

Well, we told you guys a long time ago that Tony Stark would be making an appearance in The Incredible Hulk. So many of you listened to us and told your friends that Marvel decided the cat was already out of the bag and they may as well exploit the popular Iron Man connection.

Will Captain America be in “The Incredible Hulk” too?

A funny thing is starting to happen with the upcoming summer blockbuster, The Incredible Hulk.

I think I’m more excited about the cameos by OTHER superheroes than I am about seeing the Hulk himself!

Okay, maybe not completey, but seriously…the hype surrounding this movie in regards to special appearances and what it will mean for future Avenger films is staggering.

First Look at Robert Downey, Jr. and Jamie Foxx in “The Soloist”

The Soloist tells the true story of Nathaniel Ayers (played by Foxx), a musical prodigy who developed schizophrenia during his second year at Juilliard School. Ayers became homeless, playing the violin and the cello in the streets of downtown Los Angeles.

New “Captain America” details, plus the “Iron Man” shield connection

We’ve got some good Captain America stuff for you today, although the bit about his shield was something I meant to post last week or the week before.

SciFi posted some comments Kevin Fiege (president of Marvel studios) made on the 21st to some online journalists.

It’s going to be set during World War II, exactly like the comic books and Fiege pretty much killed the sick rumors that Matthew “look at my chest” McConaughey would play Captain America.
